Thank you, all, for the warm welcome. I've enjoyed this site so much in the past few months and I think it has so much promise and potential in what is, as much as SeriousOffshore 2.0, Internet 2.0. A lot of you know me from Powerboat magazine, and I am flattered by your kind words, but what most of you probably don't know is that I managed the powerboating content on Boats.com for almost ten years. (I still write a bi-weekly column for Boats.com.) I was there when the only "revenue stream" for Boats.com was venture capital.
My point is that I've seen the good, the bad and the (very, very) ugly of the Internet, and what's emerging is much smarter and vital than what was happening ten years ago. Because of its resources, meaning the many knowledgeable and talented individuals who contribute on these forums, SeriousOffshore is positioned to be whatever it wants to be. It could become, for example, an online news magazine with daily and weekly updates and features including video. Whatever it becomes the forums will be site's heart and soul, at least to my way of thinking. They're great. And you don't mess with great.
Anyone who tells you he has the answers to the Internet is selling something, but I do know one thing: Content sites need new content every day, maybe even several times a day. Just look at the forums on this site ... they are vital, they are compelling and they are updated every day, sometimes every hour.
In short, we're all hungry for information and the Internet can deliver it in a way no medium ever has. Everyone can participate. Everyone can have a voice. To me, it's just brilliant.
What separates this site from others (and I have the utmost respect for Steve Schuble, who did an amazing job with offshoreonly.com and is a friend) is:
1. The passion and intelligence of the performance-boat enthusiasts who founded it.
2. The expertise of the people who log time on it.
So when Chris Sunkin sent me an email and suggested we chat, I was thrilled. Chris and the rest of the people behind SeriousOffshore know they have something special, and they know that they have it at the right time.
Someone earlier in this thread asked if speedonthewater.com, my site, will become part of SeriousOffshore.com. That is certainly possible. Speedonthewater feeds the performance-boating segment of a larger site of "blogs" called BoaterMouth.com. However, that arrangement is not exclusive. I can place speedonthewater, or the blog from the site, anywhere I choose. And there are upcoming developments with BoaterMouth that will greatly benefit speedonthewater, which, I hope, will also benefit SeriousOffshore.
Sorry for all the babble. Obviously, I'm a little excited about working with the team at SeriousOffshore, as well as getting to know a lot of you folks who have made it so amazing. Obviously, through my work with Powerboat (and I am continuing to write for Powerboat as editor at large), I know a lot of "industry" people really well. After 15 years, that kind of comes with the territory. Through event coverage, I've met a lot of performance-boat owners, some of whom are now my best friends, but not nearly as many as I hope to meet through working on and contributing to this site.
And Brownie ... you must know that a writer writes, always. So clear the cobwebs and dust off your laptop. It's time to get to work.
Yes, it's time to get to work.
