The world’s fastest boats are roaring into Mission Bay on September 18-20 for San Diego Bayfair, the three-day family festival featuring high-octane fun including music, beer gardens and a Military Appreciation Day.

Bayfair is expecting one of the largest boat fleets in recent years with more than 80 teams competing in multiple classes on Mission Bay. H1 Unlimited will crown its world champion in San Diego with U-1 Oberto driver Jimmy Shane currently leading the points chase.

More than 85,000 spectators and RVers are expected to converge on East Vacation Island, Crown Point and Fiesta Island for Bayfair, which features nonstop racing action on the water.

“The race teams and their fans always love to come to San Diego because of the beauty of Mission Bay and the history of the Bill Muncey racecourse,” said Bob Davies, San Diego Bayfair’s race director. “We can’t wait to play host for fans and competitors from around the world.”

San Diego Bayfair History

San Diego Bayfair has a long and rich tradition in Mission Bay Park. The first race was staged in 1964 thanks to the foresight of the great Unlimited hydroplane racer Bill Muncey. Muncey was the driving force behind Bayfair and getting the racecourse built to host the event.

Bill MunceyA Master Plan for Mission Bay was approved by the City of San Diego in 1958 and set in motion the creation of the racecourse between East Vacation Island and Fiesta Island. (Neither island existed until a massive dredging project formed them.) The shorelines were curved to accommodate a 2.5-mile oval course and beaches were sloped to dissipate waves from motorboats and hydroplanes.

The parking lot and launch ramp on East Vacation Island was designed as a pit area for hydroplanes. The light posts were set in a line to facilitate easy access for the hydroplanes, trucks and equipment.

To ensure boat racing on Mission Bay, San Diego Municipal Code allows “to hold a boat race in the course of which unmuffled engines may be used by the contestants… for a period of time not exceeding ten (10) days in all.” The Municipal Code also includes, “In addition to the aforementioned 10 day permit, the Director may issue a permit for unlimited hydroplane racing, provided such permit shall be for a period of time not exceeding four (4) additional days in any calendar year.”

The 2.5-mile racecourse, which was named after the late Bill Muncey, is the longest and fastest racecourse on the H1 Unlimited hydroplaneBlimps circuit. Driver Dave Villwock set the World Lap Speed Record of 173.384 mph in 1999 at Bayfair. Villwock has won a record nine Bill Muncey Cups, including his first ever Unlimited hydroplane race victory on the waters of Mission Bay.

Over the years, more than 5 million people have enjoyed the races on Mission Bay. Bayfair has grown from just a hydroplane race in 1964 to an event that featured drag boats, international competitors, live music and aerial demonstrations. Boat-racing tours including Formula One tunnel boats, Grand Prix West, P1 USA, Pacific Offshore Powerboat Racing Association and various semi-professional classes have competed at Bayfair.

Bayfair is a nonprofit 501(c)4 event organized and run entirely by volunteers. An eight-member Board of GovernorsAwardsHistory directs and oversees more than 700 volunteers to stage the three-day festival, which takes places each September. More than 500 RV owners, friends and family get the rare opportunity to stay in Mission Bay Park for the festival weekend. The event is featured on national television and in local and national print publications.

In 2012, Bayfair was responsible for generating 13,600 room nights and in excess of $1.7 million in hotel revenue, according to a survey performed by VisionQuest.

In the past, San Diego Bayfair has been a strong supporter of military veteran programs and other charitable community causes.

San Diego Bayfair powerboat racing coming to Mission Bay

Described as a “dramatic 200 mph duel in the sun” during three full days of diversified, high-powered thunderboat racing, San Diego Bayfair’s World Series of Powerboat Racing will be held Friday to Sunday, Sept. 18 to 20.

Guests on East Vacation Island, Crown Point and Fiesta Island will see the H1 Unlimited hydroplane series, Grand Prix West, in addition to numerous smaller boat-racing classes.

Ticket are required for adults to see the races. Children under age 12 are admitted free.

Tickets for San Diego Bayfair are now available for purchase online. In addition to online ticket purchasing, guests can buy tickets at the race site. Ticket booths are available on Fiesta Island, Crown Point and across the street from East Vacation Island.

Recent invites to more than 23 individual racing classes and more than 150 high-competition teams highlight this year's exciting speed classic on the waters of Mission Bay Park.

The boats, some racing at speeds topping 225 mph, come every year to San Diego because of the outstanding race course conditions and summer weather.

But it's the family festival, live entertainment, vendors, great food and beer gardens, fireworks, kids fun zone and other family activities that set the event apart from others in San Diego's jewel, Mission Bay Park.

Bayfair, San Diego's largest annual family festival and sports competition, attracts race fans from all over the world, with more than 150,000 spectators attending during the event’s three days.

Bayfair is renowned for its family festival atmosphere (1,000-plus motorhomers), interactive exhibits, vendors and specialty foods, nightly live entertainment and Saturday night’s fireworks extravaganza.

San Diego Bayfair attracts more powerboat racing classes than any other site in the world and is known as the hallmark event of this kind in the nation.

The different classes of boats will race on the famed Bill Muncey Memorial Race Course, in honor of the sport's greatest unlimited driver, with 62 unlimited wins. The Bill Muncey race course is the fastest race course in the world.

Among the hydro highlights, organizers say racing fans will want to catch a glimpse of the H1 Unlimited hydroplane, Go3Racing, expected to make its first appearance at Bayfair since 2008. The vessel is powered by a dual turbocharged Allison V-12 engine.

Other things attendees can enjoy on land include live music, beer gardens, vendors and activities for kids. This year, spectators can also tour a pit area that allows fans to get up close with the boats and racing teams on the bay.

U-5 got injured in a truck stop on the way out, but was repaired and made qualifying today.

A hydroplane participating in the annual San Diego Bayfair flipped during a qualifying session Friday on Mission Bay, going from 170 miles per hour to zero in a matter of seconds, event organizers confirmed.

The U-18 Bucket List Racing hydroplane was involved in the accident on the water just before 1 p.m. The driver, 64-year-old Kelly Stocklin, was able to climb out of the overturned boat and was taken to a hospital for evaluation as a precaution, organizers said.

Bayfair organizers said the wind on the racecourse had picked up slightly at the time of the crash, but no other accidents were reported on the water.

John O'Brien, who does radio communications for the U-18 team, said they were doing a timing run and had just made some adjustments to the vessel.

In fact, the boat was going the fastest it had gone in three years, he said.

"Perfect storm. He hit a roller from one side. Boat lifted up on the left side and blew over about one and a half times and did a pirouette," said O'Brien.

He said every portion of the boat has damage to it, and there is no insurance in this sport. If it's a total loss, the team is out $300,000, according to O'Brien. The boat has been pulled from the competition.

Stocklin, the driver from Washington, will be held overnight at the hospital as he is evaluated. "Our concern right now is with Kelly Stocklin and his wife," said O'Brien.

He explained that despite the high-intesity of the races, no one has died in at least 12 years. The last death, O'Brien said, was in San Diego.

"There's been a lot of safety precautions done with these boats," he said, "with the cockpits being made out of Kevlar and carbon graphite like a bulletproof vest. It's an F-16 fighter pilot canopy that is part of the boat."

The U-18 is one of 11 H1 Unlimited hydroplanes racing at the 51st annual high-octane event, which continues through Sunday on East Vacation Island, Crown Point and Fiesta Island.

More than 80 teams are from around the world will race on the bay in front of more than 85,000 spectators throughout the weekend. This includes 10 Grand Prix West hydroplanes as well as dozens of boats in smaller classes

Bayfair qualifying fast, furious

For the first time in the 51-year history of the San Diego Bayfair Regatta, qualifying has never been this fast and this close.

Seven of the nine H1 Unlimited Hydroplanes that qualified Friday are within nine miles per hour of each other and for the first time, San Diego has seven hydroplanes that qualified faster than 150 mph on the 2 1/12-mile Mission Bay course.

"This is always the fastest race course on the circuit, but today you witnessed how fast and good the entire H1 fleet can be," said Covington's Jimmy Shane, driver of the Oberto Beef Jerky. "It has been a battle each and every week on race day. Well, today it was a real fight to take the qualifying spot."

Shane, the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane National High Points leader, took the top spot with a one-lap average speed of 159.50 mph. Close behind Shane was Cal Phipps in the Dalton Industries hydroplane with a speed of 158.93.

"We have been getting better each week," Phipps said. "All year long it has been great racing between the Shane and (J. Michael) Kelly for the championship win and now I feel we have a chance to get in the middle of that mix."

Kelly, of Bonney Lake, in the Graham Trucking, was the fourth fastest qualifier with a speed of 156.09 as the piston powered Miss Home Street Bank driven by Jimmy King grabbed the third slot with a speed of 157.80.

Kelly and Shane have won all previous H1 races this year while Jean Theoret in the Ellstrom Elam Plus has been the fastest qualifier at each race. The Ellstrom boat did not make the trip to San Diego after an accident in Detroit made it difficult to repair the boat in time.

The qualifying and testing session had a scary moment during the morning session when Kelly Stocklin in the Bucket List Racing blew over on the front straight. Stocklin was taken to University of California San Diego Hospital where he is being kept overnight for observation.

Racing is all day Saturday and Sunday with a number of different classes participating. The H1 Unlimited Hydroplanes compete Saturday starting at 4:15 p.m. with the first set of heats starting at 2:40 Sunday and the winner take all final at 4:10.

Oberto tops Bayfair qualifying, expands points lead

Jimmy Shane took one step closer to his third-straight National High Points title by seizing the top qualifying spot for this weekend’s San Diego Bayfair on Friday.

Shane steered the U-1 Oberto/Miss Madison to an average speed of 159.50 mph on the 2.5-mile Mission Bay course to best a field that saw a record seven boats crack the 150-mph mark.

The performance enabled Shane to increase his lead to 666 points over J. Michael Kelly and the U-5 Graham Trucking with just four heats or racing left in the 2015 season. Kelly qualified fourth.

“This is always the fastest race course on the circuit but today you witnessed how fast and good the entire H1 fleet can be,” Shane said. “It has been a battle each and every week on race day, well today it was a real fight to take the qualifying spot.”

It marked Shane’s first qualifying award since the season finale at Doha, Qatar, a year ago. Jean Theoret took the three previous awards this season aboard the U-96 Ellstrom Elam Plus, but repairs to the boat after an accident at Detroit have not been completed and the team did not make the trip.

Cal Phipps was a surprising second on the ladder, steering the U-27 Dalton Industries to an average speed of 158.93 mph. It was the highest position the team has attained in its rookie campaign.

“We have been getting better each week,” Phipps said. “All year long it has been great racing between the Shane and (J. Michael) Kelly for the championship win and now I feel we have a chance to get in the middle of that mix.”

Jimmy King was third-fastest aboard the piston-powered U-3 Miss HomeStreet Bank at 157.80 while Kelly was fourth at 156.09. Brian Perkins rounded out the top five at 155.08 aboard the U-21 All Access Rentals.

The first day of testing and qualifying wasn’t without its drama due to a blowover by the U-18 Bucket List Racing in the afternoon test session. Driver Kelly Stocklin walked off the rescue boat but was taken to University of California San Diego Hospital hospital where he is being kept overnight for observation. The boat was heavily damanged and the team has withdrawn from the race.

A total of nine boats put down qualifying speeds on the afternoon. The 10th, the U-12 Miss DiJulio, never got off the trailer and will attempt to qualify this morning.

Racing will take place all day Saturday and Sunday with multiple classes of race boats participating. The H1 Unlimited Hydroplanes compete Saturday starting at 7:15 p.m. EDT with the first set of heats starting at 5:40 Sunday and the winner take all final at 7:10 EDT. Oberto to end sponsorship run

Oberto says farewell as a sponsor in the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Series on Sunday at the season-ending San Diego Bayfair race on Mission Bay.

Kent-based Oberto Brands – with the backing of Art and Dorothy Oberto, and their son, Larry – has sponsored an unlimited hydroplane since 1975.

During a 16-year sponsorship run, Oberto hydros have won 19 races, including two Gold Cup titles, five H1 Unlimited Hydroplane National High Points boat championships and seven drivers titles.

Only Budweiser, Atlas Van Lines, Bardahl, Ellstrom Manufacturing, Pay 'n Pak and Thriftway have more wins as a sponsor than Oberto, and only Budweiser sponsored a team longer.

Larry Oberto announced that the boat would be known as the Oberto Beef Jerky for the final race.

The first Oberto-sponsored hydroplane was Bob Murphy's veteran U-4. The hull had been built in 1962 as the Notre Dame and made its debut as Oh Boy! Oberto at the 1975 Tri-Cities Gold Cup. With Chuck Hickling at the wheel, the U-4 finished seventh in a 15-boat field.

Oberto has been the sponsor of the Madison, Ind., boat since 2000.

Covington's Jimmy Shane, driving the U-1 Oberto Beef Jerky, has a seemingly unbeatable 626-point lead for the high points championship over Bonney Lake's J. Michael Kelly in the U-5 Graham Trucking. But recent deck-to-deck battles with Kelly – the defending Bayfair champion – pose a threat for Shane and his bid to take his third win of the season.

Shane and Kelly have had two epic confrontations during the last two races in Seattle and Detroit. Kelly won the race on Lake Washington, while Shane took the win on the Detroit River.

"I don't know if this is the best racing unlimited hydroplane racing has witnessed, but it is the most competitive racing season I have ever been a part of," said Shane who is looking for his second national high point title. "I have a points lead, but it isn't over until it is over. I have to race smart, not make any silly mistakes and keep the boat running during each of the preliminary heats. If I can do that, I can let it all hang out in the championship final." ...
