lookin for opinions which 38 scarab could crush the waves the best, do they get better or worse the newer they get

The bottoms are all pretty much the same. The only difference is going to be weight. It's simple physics. Something is going to move. If you carried an extra 5k lbs in any 38 Scarab it would ride great and mash through waves. But it would be slow. Everything is a tradeoff.

Nah... Don't go trying to tell me a 38' Scarab was ever used for hauling 5K of payload...
Not back in the 80's.
Never would have happened.

For what it's worth...

I love the old Scarabs. I always liked the KAAMA version.
Just a badazz looking boat, but still a production boat, but not many of them built.
Must've just loved the fact that it had race hatches.

A bud had a old early 80 something scarab. Got rid of it in favor of a newer 90 something 40 fiore hustler. Wanted the scarab back. Don't get me wrong the hustler was fast , trip 600's but the scarab was easy on the wallet.

Well, if the Scarab was made by wellcraft, it's not crushing anything but itself untill you put new stringers and a transom on it...... Then you might have something.

I wouldn't go as far as phragle, but every Wellcraft Scarab needs to be thoroughly checked out. There seems to be a lot inconsistency in the quality of assembly. Having torn apart two 38' scarabs, I was alternately delighted and chagrined with things that I saw. For example, pay attention when you disassemble the cockpit sole and inspect the fuel tank cavity. You may see chamfered holes where fuel vent tube goes to deck fitting, appropriate backing for the bolster mounts, good wiring and strong stringer bridges for the center section of the sole OR things may need serious attention. The old style 38 LS was just as good as other boats ...Cig,Apache,and so on...i know where there is a nice one for sale too,,,100+ MPH and it runs in anything !!! :cheers2:

just had mine out in 3 to 5's.( thats wave sizes for you inlanders HAHA) First time out in it. ran great. didn't run to fast for the first time but ran 45 in it. The New London ferry wake was fun..... At least a 7 footer out of no where!!!! at 45 launched the boat a little, pulled the throttles back and in for a sweet re-entry and pushed the stix back to the dash.:driving: Cant compare it to much anything else but my older 31 Viper but I think it crushes waves pretty good:cheers2:

I saw a TON of old school Scarab's this weekend in Clearlake Texas. They are still out there holding there own!

I especially liked a redone 377 looked like a 81'82.
