Old photo I took in the Detroit Gold Cup pits back in '92 when they still ran one of these in the Unlimited Class Hydros. Nothing like the sound of these firing on all 12! Can't imagine the sound when making a run with all 3 cranked up in PT boat ...

those old engines are pretty high tech they even have 4 valves per cylinder i had a chance to see german engines that were dug up from some airport not sure why they were buried but they were sitting in a warbird musium where you could fly one of our old gals pretty neat but pricy! the german V12s were amazing inside like a watch they even had variable valve timing the mechanical fuel injection was extremely complicated and their castings and gears just blew me away when you think this was all pre computer

I have a friend in Wichita, Ks that has a bunch of old Allison engines. He has one in a rolling chassis roadster he has been playing with. He has a old Hydroplane he is building/restoring too. Says he is going to use it for a lake boat.
He used to have fire up parties every Thursday.

that would be cool

PT boats were mostly Packards, I believe. I don't think that those engines were aircraft rated like the Allisons and Rolls.

Jack Roush's engine shop in Livonia has an FAA-approved aircraft engine area. Very impressive technology for 60+ years ago.

There was a 27 Magnum in the classies about a year ago on OSO with a Allison V12 in the front. Wish I could find the pics it was cool as hell but he wanted very big bucks for it.
