According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Antonio Motes-Diaz is accused of swinging a machete at Christopher Stevens, 26, and Stevens’ girlfriend, who the Sheriff’s Office did not name.
Motes-Diaz faces a felony count of assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. At press time Thursday, he was being held on no bond in county jail.
Motes-Diaz, 53, said he was defending himself against Stevens and the woman. He said the woman spat on him and the man physically attacked him when he told them there was no more crack to smoke.
The couple and Motes-Diaz are neighbors on Point Pleasant Drive in Key Largo.
Stevens and his girlfriend admitted to deputies that they drank and smoked crack with Motes-Diaz.
Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Deputy Becky Herrin said deputies arrested Stevens after they found him holding Aplrazolam, the generic version of Xanax. Herrin said he did not have a prescription for the pills.
Stevens was being held on no bond as of press time Thursday afternoon.
