Powerboat races coming to Port Huron without the festival
Liz Shepard, Times Herald

The St. Clair River will roar with life Saturday and Sunday as one of the biggest events of the weekend will feature boats rocketing down the waterway between Port Huron and Sarnia.

But while concerts and events are planned along the Canadian shorelines, things will be a bit quieter on Port Huron soil.

"We need partners, and that's what fell apart this year — there were no partners," said Mike Delong, Acheson Ventures director of operations.

Delong said there will be a dry pit near Court and Third streets to display some of the boats and let fans mingle with the crews, as well as a couple of food vendors and free parking for the public along the river.

Boats will start arriving Thursday and Friday, have time trials in the river between noon and 5 p.m. Saturday, with races Sunday afternoon.

However, the free concerts that usually kicked off the race weekend on Fridays won't happen this year.

"There are no concerts, there is no anything, just the village and coming down and seeing the boats ... and the actual race Sunday," Delong said.

The Sarnia/Port Huron International Powerboat Festival is in its sixth year.

Delong said organizers hope to bring back the festival activities to coincide with the race weekend in the future.

"We need partners to make all this happen, just nobody came to the table (this year)," he said.

Delong said Acheson Ventures previously worked with LeeAnn Peart, a former director of Downtown Port Huron.

More than 30,000 people attend the Sarnia Powerboat Festival, according to the event's website, with ticketed concerts Friday and Saturday nights, kids activities and demonstrations. Find out more at sarniapowerboatfestival.com.
