International powerboat teams head to FMB for championship

The inaugural 2019 APBA Offshore Championship six-race series will climax during Roar Offshore Powerboat Races Oct. 10-12 on Fort Myers Beach. The races will also serve as the national championship for Offshore Powerboat Association.

Two leading race-sanctioning organizations, OPA and Powerboat P1, have partnered this season to deliver outstanding sporting action and entertainment at six race venues throughout the United States.

Powerboat P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala and OPA President Ed “Smitty” Smith both indicated the aim of the new partnership is to strengthen the future of offshore racing in the United States by uniting the race teams in a way that has been missed for a long time, in order to deliver an expanded, cohesive, world-class race series split equally between northern and southern states. This year’s Roar Offshore will be livestreamed on facebook.com/Powerboat P1WC, and a post race broadcast on CBS Sports will air at noon Sunday, Oct. 20.

“We want to stage events that excite and entertain, ensuring enjoyment for spectators and TV audiences with sponsor value and a real economic impact for the host venues,” Mr. Rangoonwala said.

Roar Offshore President Tim Hill shared his enthusiasm, stating, “Race teams come from all over the world to compete. Both visitors and residents can enjoy a number of pre-race parties, and seize the opportunity to see the powerboats up close.”

A parade of boats over the bridge onto Old San Carlos Boulevard kicks things off on Thursday, Oct. 10, followed by a street party. A Race Village, where all the race teams will be on display, opens at 9 a.m. Friday at Salty Sam’s. Race teams will be testing Friday, so there promises to be plenty of action out on the water as well.

All the racing action takes place on Saturday, with an awards ceremony following later that evening at the DiamondHead Beach Resort. Remote parking on Friday and Saturday offering shuttles to the beach will be located at Century Link Stadium and LaMotta’s Italian Restaurant. Additional remote parking for Saturday will be at Century Link Stadium and Peace Lutheran Church. Race Day VIP Packages and Championship VIP Weekend Packages are available.

Plenty of activities surrounding the powerboat races

Roar Offshore gives spectators all the action they can handle on the water, but onshore Fort Myers Beach, attendees will be treated to a myriad of race-related events to enjoy across nearly a week of excitement.

The festivities begin for the American Powerboat Association Roar Offshore event on Fort Myers Beach Oct. 7 with a kick-off social mixer at Fresh Catch Bistro.

This event will be a chance to grab VIP packages for race day that includes a private table, bar and food service as well as a more shaded and air conditioned area to observe the action at "turn 1," the best seat in the house.

"All fans are welcome to come out," said Tim Hill, Roar Offshore president. "There will be live entertainment and a chef sampling."

Chef Pablo will be serving up delectable eats for $15 per person. There is no charge for entry and you do no have to commit to the prefixed sampling.

Thursday, Oct. 10, will see Race Village at Salty Sam's open to the public where boat-enthusiasts can get an up close and personal look at the powerboats that will be competing, and speak with members of each race team.

"Race Village is an intimate experience," Hill said. "You'll be able to see the motors, boats, tow rigs -- it's an exciting opportunity."

The village is free to all and will offer a not-for-profit beer garden to help wet your whistle while exploring all the scenery.

"You can get right up to the boats," Hill said. "You can touch them, get a picture with them and get to meet with team members to talk details."

A parade will take place that evening, as the Matanzas Pass Bridge will be shut down for 30 minutes to make way for the boats and teams coming over and into downtown Fort Myers Beach.

"We'll line the streets of the entertainment district," Hill said.

Parade time begins at 5:45 and go down Old San Carlos Boulevard into Times Square and down 2nd and 5th Street.

The boats will be parked along each side of the street and is another opportunity for fans to come out and chat with the teams and their boats.

There will be a street party after the parade downtown from 6-10 p.m. with live entertainment.

On Friday, it's time to drop the vessels into the water and test and tune in preparation for the big day Saturday.

"The public can be in the pits watching all the action," Hill said. "They can also watch on the Gulf side on the water as well."

Boats will be zooming around testing their motors and making sure all the nuts and bolts of their operation are fully functional.

Live entertainment will be happening at Salty Sam's/Race Village all day.

Saturday is the main event, where all 13 classes of boats will be out vying for a championship.

Classes 1-7 open the racing Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

"Superstock," "Super Vee Extreme" and "Pro Stock Vee" will race at 11:30. "Supercat" will race at 12:30 and "Class One" and "Vee Extreme" at 2.

That night, an awards ceremony will be held at DiamondHead Beach Resort at 6:30 p.m.

"This is a unique opportunity for fans to be a part of our awards celebration, not something usually done in the industry," Hill said.

Power boats getting ready to roar offshore off Fort Myers Beach

Have a need for speed and a love for the water?

Next weekend, the American Powerboat Association Roar Offshore event returns to Fort Myers Beach, where the inaugural APBA six-race series champions will be determined at the event that brings nearly 70,000 to the area annually.

The races will also serve as the National Championship for the Offshore Powerboat Association.

"Race teams come from all over the world to compete," said Tim Hill, Roar Offshore president. "Both visitors and residents can enjoy a number of pre-race parties, and seize the opportunity to see the powerboats up close."

Race day and all the action that goes along with it happens Saturday, Oct. 12, but Roar Offshore brings a party to the beach all week long.

Events leading up to the big day include kick-off socials, Race Village and a parade over the bridge where spectators can get a good look at the teams and their supercharged vessels.

Races themselves are broken down into 13 individual classes that are separated by length, top speed and engine.

Several boats in different classes may be racing at the same time, but are only competing against those in their class.

Boats will be churning up water out on the beach, where the course challenges teams with 8 different turn markers separating the start and finish line.

Scoring is broken down like this:

"Each turn of the race or race buoy has a 'Turn Boat' with Race Officials on board keeping track of the racers and their performance, as well as on the Start/Finish boat. As each race boat passes a 'Turn Boat' and 'Start/Finish' boat, the official marks their sheets according to the rules. When the event is done all times, speeds and distances traveled are calculated to determine the winner.

"An official start time begins when the bow of the boat crosses the start line. The boat is then scored by completed laps/distance. A completed lap is when a boat crosses the start line, and continues around the marks of the course and back to the finish line. The start and finish line are at the same point on the course. When the green flag (start) drops the race begins, but the first completed lap is scored when the boat passes the start/finish and then comes around again to complete the lap."

Classes 1-7 open the racing Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

"Superstock," "Super Vee Extreme" and "Pro Stock Vee" will race at 11:30. "Supercat" will race at 12:30 and "Class One" and "Vee Extreme" at 2.

Class One is the premier racing class that attracts teams from all over the world. It is a canopied catamaran class twin inboard 1100 mercury racing engines, being able to read speeds of up to 160 mph.

Supercat is also a conopid catamaran powered by twin inboard 750 engines, with top speed at approximately 140 mph.

The Superstock class in a catamaran boat powered by twin stock outboard 300 mercury racing engines. This is a popular class and considered the one of the most competitive.

Average speed for this class is around 100 mph, though can climb up to 115.

The "Vee" series races feature "V" bottom boats with the classes determined by boat length and engine size.

Pro Stock Vee and Super Vee Extreme can see speeds up to 95 mph, while Vee Extreme can notch 115-120 mph.

Class 1-7 is a bracket class where boats must stay in a bracketed speed range. Boats in these classes may have single or twin engines.

Speeds range from 60-115 mph across the spectrum of classes.

Following the races, an awards ceremony will be held at DiamondHead Beach Resort at 6:30 p.m.

This year's Roar Offshore will be live streams on Facebook and a post race broadcast on CBS Sports will air Oct. 20 at noon.

Miss GEICO Racing to Compete in the 2019 Fort Myers Beach Roar Offshore

FORT MYERS, Fla., Oct. 8, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- After more than a decade, offshore racing returns in dramatic fashion to the shores of Fort Myers Beach, FL. The Miss GEICO Offshore Racing Team is excited to compete in the 2019 Roar Offshore on Oct. 10-12. The boat races are part of a three-day festival that includes free concerts, a boat parade and block party, and intense racing action.

The Offshore Powerboat Association (OPA) and Powerboat P1 have joined forces to create the newly formed American Power Boat Association (APBA) World Offshore Championship Series, which is comprised of six races at the most desired race locations across the U.S. New rules for competition and a concerted effort between race organizations has generated interest from race teams from across the world to participate in all six races. Miss GEICO competes in the Class One racing division. Class One is comprised of the biggest and fastest race boats in the world. Teams from Dubai and Australia have come to race against America's champion Miss GEICO. All the boats in this class weigh 11,750 pounds with identical race engines sealed and governed by Mercury Racing to ensure fairness. The 47-foot Miss GEICO Victory catamaran is made of carbon, Kevlar and S-glass for high performance. The boat sports a pair of brand new and recently released Mercury sealed 1,100 horsepower twin turbo engines and can reach top speeds of more than 160 mph.

On the water, Miss GEICO is under the control of driver Miles Jennings and throttleman Steve Curtis. The teams that win in Fort Myers Beach will win the series title and world championship status. Miss GEICO is seeking its 12th world championship title and has its work cut out while competing against some of the top international teams.

The sixth and final race in the championship series takes place Saturday, October 12 with pre-race events starting Thursday, October 10. Race teams will begin arriving on Wednesday and Thursday prior to the boat parade and Roar Offshore Street Party.
