New big block Mercruiser

I'm thinking it's a de-tuned and simplified version of the HP 525EFI? It's one way to help write off the development costs of that package in a dead H-P market, plus they have long-ago engineered all the supporting accessories for the old-school GM big block...

So is it going to be a gen 6, a modified gen7 or a new gen8, the suspense

And everybody was afraid the BBC was going to disappear...

Just like the SBC, Merc has too much invested to let these platforms just die.

8.2L (8150cc - 8249cc) can be anything from 497 cubic inches to 503 cubic inches.

I wonder if this will be same block as the old 502 we're accustomed to or something completely new.

I would put money on it being a good old 502 since the 496 is supposedly going away. No reason to re-invent the wheel again.

I would be interested in knowing where the blocks are coming from too. They have not sent any to one of the main builders of the 502.

From what I understand, is that there is already an acceptable China Cast Gen 6 502 block soon to be in the market.

I know a little about this new Mercruiser 502 engine but nothings confirmed until it debuts in the marine manufacturers show in October in Florida.

What a few people in boating need to remember and understand is that the 502 blocks GM High Performance has been selling along with the 572's have not even been cast or made by GM, but were subcontracted from Tier suppliers. They will still be available from these suppliers through GM parts until they become to unprofitable to make or sell in the market.

I can tell you one thing, the cost of these new freshwater cooled replacements for the 496's will be more expensive and with these new emissions systems should be a real challange to keep running under warranty and after. If anybody in the industry can do it Mercury with their resources has the best chance.

I seem to remember about two years ago when everyone was touting GM's new LS offerings that in a certain Powerboat article interview I stated the new LS stock 6.0L based N/A or supercharged engines would not be the future of the performance boat engine market.
There is no replacement for displacement! in performance boats!
I guess Mercury was reading and agreeing with my thoughts!

I hope the industry can recover quickly and there will be some performance boat builders left to buy these new offerings. I am sure we will be able to come up with some reasonably priced goodies to tweak them up a little bit!

God Bless the Big Block!

The Industry needs a customer base to recover, Looking at Europe Germany is the only one they’re pulling out of this Reason; they kept the Industrial base intact. We are doing the exact opposite here with these Communists writing the Laws.

Any new info? Pricing? Availability?

From Matt Trulio's article in the December Powerboat, it looks like this was a pretty good guess:
  1. "...a collaboration between Mercury Racing...and MerCruiser..."
  2. "...the 8.2 liter block is the foundation for Mercury Racing's popular HP525EFI..."
  3. "...aluminum cyinder heads that are "basically the same" as the heads on the HP525EFI..."

By the way, Matt: We love you to death, but I think you were referring to "Mahle", not "Molly" in the article...
