My pup...

Well, I don't have any kids, but my two dogs are like kids to me. Both are yellow labs, Ozzy is 4 and Kailey is 8. Tonight I had to rush Kailey to the vet which is about 40 miles from me. I saw her across the room shaking and walking funny. At first I thought she hurt her leg or something playing outside, so I got her on the couch with me and was petting her. She started shaking worse and worse, was drooling all over and then acted like she was having seizures. I was able to call my mother to find the number to the 24/7 vet and call them for me. Kailey then was throwing up, couldn't stand and was falling over. I threw her in the truck and FLEW the 40 miles to the vet, in record time I think. They were waiting for me when I got there, started an IV right away and got some muscle relaxers and pain meds into her. They pumped her stomach and gave her charcoal to line the stomach walls. The vet said she must have gotten into something dead and decaying and ate it. This doesn't surprise me as I have acres of woods behind the house and the dogs run free.

Kailey is do pretty good now. She has to stay the night at the vet with an IV hooked up and so they can watch her. She's a bit groggy but the uncontrollable shaking has stopped and her temp is coming down. Like I said before, I don't have any kids, but my dogs are like kids to me. I've never been so scared in my life, I can only imagine what she must have felt like. She gets to come home tomorrow afternoon and will have to be on antibiotics for a few days, but she should be just fine. I'll keep everyone up to date on her status as I find out.

That type of stuff absolutely scares the crap out of me. Glad to hear she will be alright. We have three labs, and one of them recently spent a couple weeks in the emergency vet, thankfully she is recovering. I bet that was the longest 40 miles you have ever driven!

Good luck! My lab was the best dog I ever had and I sure do miss her. She made it to 14, here's hoping you have many more good years with your pup!

My Shar-Pei has siezures once in a while, it sucks.... I feel so bad for her, vet says it's m ore common then most think and as long as they are not often or severe don't worry about it, they are light and don't last long... happens once every 3-4 months, I hate to see it happen to her...she's my baby!

I hope Kailey is doing better and makes a full recovery. My lab is my kid too. So I know exactly how you feel. Good luck.

I have kids, so my Labs are not my kids.....

But I like the Labs better :D

Hope your girl is okay, they do get in trouble with what they eat.

Get well soon Kailey !!! From Jake, Duke and Dave.

Sorry to hear that you had to go through that, those emergency drives to the vet are very stressfull, but it sounds like it was well worth it. Let us know how she does when you get her home

Kirby sends his get well also, he said to tell Kailey that he gets an upset stomach if he eats to much people food, then his mommy gives him pepto bismal through a syringe which he hates. Kirby also wanted to know if Kailey does Yoga, cause she looks very limber practicing her spinal twist :) Namaste Kailey

GWS wishes from Rikka and Bella!

(Our two children have scared us too, and our best bet hospital is 40 miles away as well. My last car was lowered and handled well; and I used every bit of that car getting there in a hurry.)

Scary evening for sure.
Our two are like our kids also, I certainly know what you're going through.
Hope all is well, and keep us posted on the recovery.

Definitely scary!

I'm glad to hear all ended well. I get worried about even little things. Gilligan hurt his paw the other day and was limping around.

HaHa.
When we first brought the Aussie Cattle Dog home he was just a pup.
Let him out the back door to go outside, and he goes azz-over-apple-cart down the stairs. (apparently never encountered stairs before).
He was limping a little bit in the backyard, probably more scared, and bruised ego than anything.
My wife is crying, and telling me we had to get him to the vet.
He's been home for five minutes, and we've already broke our dog...
He walked it off after a few minutes, and I finally got the wife calmed down.

Thanks everyone for your support! I just picked her up and she slept the whole way home. She's doing so good though, no more tremors. She'll be happy with dinner tonight, hamburger and rice!! She has to be on meds for about a week, but will make a full recovery. This was probably the scariest moment in my life, and I hope to never have to go through something like that again. Again, thank you all so much!!!
