My Crappy Gear Lube Pump...

The Merc Pump always collapses the 5 gallon neck. Frustrating and messy. :cuss:
Rob, I have the one you have and it works great. I did not get it at your awesome price though.

I converted a 1 gallon garden sprayer to a drive lube pump. It works perfect.
Drain the drive AND the bottle.
Fill canister with about 3.5 quarts of drive fluid.
Pump pressure into the canister.
Fill drive from bottom.
When fluid comes out vent hole, but the plug in the vent hole.
Then keep filling until you see about 1" show up in the bottle.
Wait a couple hours, as a bit more drive fluid will creep up into the bottle.
Then top the bottle off with what's left in the 4th quart.
DO NOT put more than an inch of drive fluid into the bottle the way I describe. It will creep up and overflow. Ask me how I know that!
Works perfect, and I've got about $25 bucks into it including the garden sprayer and a Quicksilver drive fluid pump for the drive fitting only.
You will have to do this with warm (60-70*/room temperature or above) drive fluid.
Save your old drive fluid pumps though. They work great for extracting fluid should you ever get too high.

Yup, I always fill the drive from the bottom.
This is the one I use...
That's the same one I use Rick. I've never had any problems. Something is not sealing right if you're get'n air.

And my pail mount pump is only $25!!!:cheers2:
The sprayer is nice because if it falls over it wont leak.
One of the things I did not like about it was you always have to pour oil from the quart containers into the sprayer and if you buy 5 gal pails it can be a mess and a PITA. When you do enough drives it doesn't pay to buy quart containers or even 1 gal containers. You buy 5 gal pails, remove the lid, put the pump on top and pump until it's all gone then put the pump on the new pail!
I guess it's all about preference and what you're used to so it really doesn't matter either way! :cheers2:

When draining the gear lube is it better to do it after you use the boat so that the lube is a little bit warmer and drains better. I always do it when the boat is dry because I get paranoid about even getting 1 drop of water in the drive, but it takes for ever to drain (and yes I open the vent valve).

It'll definitely help to run the engine first. You don't necessarily need to run the boat but at least run it on the hose for 15 minutes. Don't worry about a drop of water, it wont kill ya! 10-20 drops or a dribble..lol, yeah not good.
