Mortality-Check tonight

My Brother-in-law bought a Can-Am Spyder (by BRP/Sea-Doo/Ski-Doo/Bombardier) in October. It only has about 175 miles on it.
I took it out for a 20 mile roundtrip tonight; my first time riding it. We had a nice evening, and I wanted to see what it was like. For the first 18 miles it was great! I was quite impressed with the handling, nimbleness, and pep.

I got 2 miles from the house, and something just didn't feel right, so I eased home around 40 mph. I had been doing 65 or so just previously. Gradually, it just felt to "slip out of gear". It eventually just coasted to a stop from about 40 mph, on a straight stretch of back road. Once it stopped, I could see and smell smoke.

Turns out the main oil line from the bottom of the crank case and the oil cooler POPPED OFF. It had those cheap-ass crimp hose connectors on it. I can't BELIEVE they put these on a MOTORCYCLE(trike)!! Two miles/two minutes earlier, and I would have been in real trouble. It completely coated the underside of the trike with oil, and saturated the rear tire. I didn't have a camera, and it was really dark, but the oil stripe is probably 75 feet long.

We towed it home with the truck, and it's going to the dealer tomorrow to document the issue. I shut it off immediately, so we are hoping for no engine damage, but its under warranty.

Oh, and those P.O.S. hose clamps are coming off. My Brother-in-law bought it for commuting, and my sister rides it too. I am very thankful this was a benign incident.

Saw your comments on facebook about this. I had flashbacks for you when I read it.

Good to know your safe. The machine can be fixed.

Gotta love my Sister...

When we got it in their garage, and were heading inside after diagnosing the problem; her words:

"So, Mrs. Lincoln, what did you think of the play?" LOL

Trike back in garage after tow home.
Oil coated back tire.
Oil line that came off.

It rained after I got home, and washed a lot of the oil off.

First pic is the oil down the center of the lane when it came apart. You can see where I stopped and the rest of it drained out.
Second pic is rear tire trail as I pushed it off the road, notice my oil foot prints.

Try sticking a piston in an RD400 at 90mph some time...

No thanks! I got loose on a Suzuki 600 years ago on the DC-Beltway due to a Peterbuilt's blown engine & diesel/oil slick.

I'm just pissed about this whole incident since it's a brand new unit with cheap ass components that could have checked me out.

Wow, who the F uses a push-on hose like that for oil? And is that line actually pressurized?

But as for checking you out....it's a trike....they aren't supposed to fall over right? :D

Oh yah, I'm with ya on that... But honestly, maybe it's some "Darwinian" thing... like Bombardier his actually engaged in a social program to assasinate people who'd buy something as goofy as a snowmobile with tires... Ya know, clean up the gene pool and all. :D

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that when he brought it home in October, it had a SNAKE in it.

Seriously. My Brother-In-Law had to pull the fairings off of it to get it out.

I'm calling the EPA and Green Peace for the damage to did to the environment:biggrinjester:

Well, my Brother-in-law hoped for the best today. He replaced the hose clamp with a real hose clamp, and filled it up with oil.

Within 5 seconds of starting, the same oil line popped off AGAIN, and this time the oil had metal shavings in it. This leads me to believe the oil cooler is blocked and that caused the whole blow off in the first place.

Wonderful. Brand new trike with 185 miles on it, and a blown engine.
