My Brother-in-law bought a Can-Am Spyder (by BRP/Sea-Doo/Ski-Doo/Bombardier) in October. It only has about 175 miles on it.
I took it out for a 20 mile roundtrip tonight; my first time riding it. We had a nice evening, and I wanted to see what it was like. For the first 18 miles it was great! I was quite impressed with the handling, nimbleness, and pep.
Pic of identical trike:
I got 2 miles from the house, and something just didn't feel right, so I eased home around 40 mph. I had been doing 65 or so just previously. Gradually, it just felt to "slip out of gear". It eventually just coasted to a stop from about 40 mph, on a straight stretch of back road. Once it stopped, I could see and smell smoke.
Turns out the main oil line from the bottom of the crank case and the oil cooler POPPED OFF. It had those cheap-ass crimp hose connectors on it. I can't BELIEVE they put these on a MOTORCYCLE(trike)!! Two miles/two minutes earlier, and I would have been in real trouble. It completely coated the underside of the trike with oil, and saturated the rear tire. I didn't have a camera, and it was really dark, but the oil stripe is probably 75 feet long.
We towed it home with the truck, and it's going to the dealer tomorrow to document the issue. I shut it off immediately, so we are hoping for no engine damage, but its under warranty.
Oh, and those P.O.S. hose clamps are coming off. My Brother-in-law bought it for commuting, and my sister rides it too. I am very thankful this was a benign incident.
