Merc 420 Cyclone engines

no new updates... still "just looking" havent had a chance to go see the boat or do anything on it either. Been pretty busy plus im looking for a job right now.

beeing bussy and looking for a job do not work..i have the same problem all the time !!!!! HEHEHEHE :sifone::boobflash:

stopped by to see the boat today, i was not ale to count the teeth on the drives, as the props and the nut did not leave any the of the teeth exposed. If I get the okay to get the boat outside for a few days to work on it whats the easiest way to get those props off and what size do you think that nut is? Will fluid pour out the back?

Trying to see what drives i actually have will make it easier to know what engines they will handle and how much I will be able to beat on them. Also i am hoping someone will chime in and let me know what to do to service the drives so I know they are ready to go.

Oh yeah... and who ever gave the idea of finding a tow company to use a wrecker to pull the engine out, great idea as my new job is at a tow company as a AAA battery techinician.

It's amazing how things work out sometimes......:)

You should remove the drives and have a capable shop service them. #3 were typically regarded as good for 700 to 800 hp.

No fluid will come out by removing props. Probably a 1 7/16 nut. But with the two spline sizes there are two nut sizes as well. The smaller shaft may have 1 1/4 not sure. I big crescent should do the job.

I don't know how everyone else does it, but I use a 2 x2 or 2 x 4 to hold the prop from turning when removing the nut. You want to be careful not to damage the props. Also, make sure the prop lock washer deals have been flipped open, not sure what you will have on there. Anyone?

No prop lock tabs on SSM. If there is grease on the splines the prop should slide right off with a little "love tap" or two. If they are stuck a puller may be necessary.

For those of you who missed it, here is the link to where he inherited the boat with a few more pics... (not enough yet:sifone:)

My sister got a new camera so when i bring the boat over to the house (if the storage facility is able to get it out for me) I will get some pictures of everything.

I don't have a cresent that big but i might have a deep impact socket that big. If not ill have to see what i can find at our shop at work.

So do you wedge the 2x4 between the prop/ground or prop/trailer? is the nut a reverse thread or anything? i was looking at the nut and it was looking like a little rust may make getting that nut off a little difficult. I should squirt it with wd-40 right when i get it out of the storage and it should be good by the time i get home.

I have a big rubber mallet that should do the trick once i get the nut off.

I am excited to get some progress on this.

new update... boat is out of storage and in front of the house. Day one of "Project Dad" will begin tomorrow.

Jeff, give me a call... you said you were going to be in town in Oct. Would be cool to have the boat at our house for the sake of not being rushed.

I just got home from hockey... i see that the forcast is clearing up in the area. I hit the prop nuts with wd40 last night in hopes to loosen things up before i bust them loose. Pictures to come by maybe mid day. :hurray:

ok teaser pics... the rain is not letting up. I tried to break those prop nuts loose with a wrench... no bueno. Impact gun with deep impact socket? Gun check... socket don't have that size, what size should i go get from the store?

I will upgrade the qaulity of the pics once the sun comes out :boobflash:

I was using a 9 inch crecent but i wasnt able to hold the prop very well. The 2x4 i was using kept slipping. I might have to cut it to just the right length. I have a compressor and an impact gun that would probably break it loose. Will I damage anything?

From last night... My friend Matt was more than happy to tow the boat with his F-250

Count the splines on the propshafts. 19 spline is a #3, 26 spline is a 3a. My money is on them being #3 drives.

I would keep the gil exhaust, and not put some cheapy manifolds on the engines. You will never hurt a #3 with 420hp mills.

As for the engines, after sitting all these years, I would probably go thru both of them. Good luck, its a cool old boat!

ding ding ding... i counted 19 on the input shaft in the engine compartment.
