Ok guys im gonna build a motor for my Excalibur.
I want a good reliable 500+ hp motor for as little money as possible.

Here is what I have so far. I am using the heads (no money for better)
454 with 4 bolt mains
Cast internals (junk)
Set of 781 heads (stock)
Stainless Manifolds with Dry Pipes


What do you guys recomend for this motor ?

I would also consider buying used parts if they had low hours.
Does anyone have any parts laying around they wanna donate

:dupe: Gellner had me dialed in with a 454 550hp, dart heads, stock rods, JE 9.6:1 compression, dart intake manifold, CMI headers, Cranes Cams rockers, lifters and cam, blue printed and balanced.

I have a cam and intake manifold from my 454 build with 480hp..... send me a PM, and we care talk some more about it.

Not that many options to make 500+ with cast internals since you shouldn't spin it much more than 5000rpms. Port heads, up compression to about 9.5, bigger cam, Air Gap intake, 800cfm carb. Probably still can't make 500 hp unless you spin up to 5500rpms.

Here is a couple of econo build lists for 454 that is nothing too special but worked well. Probably recognize some of the names I pulled it a while back from a thread on another site. Come in usefull once in a while.

Here's the Federal Mogul parts list for SuperV's 454+.030, which dyno'd at Tom Earhart's shop at 505 chp@5500;

Dyno's engines have H693CP+.030 hypereutectic pistons, 9.5:1. All other components are as listed above, including cams.

Waterfoul's engine has H426CP+ .060 hypereutectics, 8.6:1 and a slightly smaller cam, CS1139R, 224/232@.050, .527/.553 lift, GM rectangular-port heads, GM aluminum intake, Holley carb, all other components are the same.

BGIII's engine also has H426CP hypereutectics, he used an Ultradyne cam(virtually the same #'s as the CS1139R), GM rectangle-port heads, GM aluminum intake, Q-jet carb. All other components as listed.


500hp from a 454 is not out of range.

I have a nice GM forged crank and rods if your interested. The rods are resized with ARP bolts already installed and the crank has not been turned but has been polished. It would be a step in the right direction.

I have two sets of heads off Hp500's (carb) and one cam shaft with lifters, I do not know how many Hours are on the Lifters .

If you're going to that, then buy a complete rotating assembly and stroke it to a 496ci. You should be able to make 550hp pretty easily.

I also have 2 sets of heads that are from a 500efi, one set is fresh the other with 45 hours. 850/45 hr heads 950/fresh. pm me if they might help ya. they have been milled a bit to raise compression.

If the shortblock is healthy and ready to run I would consider bolting on a small blower. 525sc takeoffs can be found cheap. Use good head gaskets and exhaust valves and she will please you immensly. Set it up with a tight quench (.040ish), large top ring end gaps and use arp head bolts. The weak point in your shortblock would be the 3/8" rod bolts, if you can change them to arps it would help. If not, I wouldn't be afraid of that either.

There are a lot of people around that would not agree your cast parts are junk in a realativly low rpm marine application. A 7500rpm 1/4 mile engine, not so good.
