Just when you think it can't get any worse

This is gut wrenching.
Friends of mine from the truck forum I frequent rode out the F5 tornado in Alabama.
Their house was spared, but they left to stay with family in Indiana until the power was restored. Last night power was turned on and a surge sparked a fire that destroyed their house:(

Well, here comes our second round of tornadoes....today. Think this band of storms is going to skim a little north of us though.

There are five confirmed tornadoes on the ground right now in northern Alabama stretching from Decatur area to Chattanooga, TN area. This has been an unreal day.

We just lost power, literally five minutes ago....

Thanks alot Pat....you jinxed us.

Ugh, we are hunkered down in the hall, can't get a text or call out but 3G works for Internet? Sirens and wind, and D is poking his head out again

Gotta go for a bit

We are okay! Some family members had damage but I reckon everyone is safe. There is an extreme amount of damage down the road and I will be surprised if we get power back in the next couple days.

Fort Payne hospital is over capacity with approximately 200 patients listed as in critical condition.

According to the scanners there were at least 4 confirmed dead 30 minutes after this one went through our town. That number is sure to rise as there are hundreds missing.

Like was said, it was about a half mile wide swath of total destruction and was less than a mile south of us. That included Plainview High School and many businesses that sit on AL hwy 35 where it crossed right there. It basically followed AL highway 75 about a mile south of it running parallel. We live about a quarter mile south of 75.

We ventured out for a look see and I will admit, I didnt like what I saw. That thing was on the ground for at least 25 miles just based on the two places where we crossed the damage swath.

The closest town that we know of near here that actually has power is Gadsden. Our entire mountain is without power(approximately 1000 square miles) and I dont see it coming back anytime soon.

The numbers we are hearing here are 183 confirmed dead and hundreds more missing and unaccounted for.

Had heard this morning that that tornado was on the ground for 63 miles. I knew it was at least 25 last night because we crossed the destruction path in two spots that were 20-25 miles apart.

Nobody within 50 miles of here has any power and we are being told that it will be days if not a week before power can be restored. I am calling around trying to find someplace that has power where a store might be open. I am hearing rumors that Gadsden Alabama has power, but haven't confirmed that yet(that is about 50 miles away as the bird flies). We have very few groceries in the house as Mary was planning to go shopping last night. I am almost out of cigarettes(yeah, I know, Bad Habit) I got like a half a pack left. The real problem is that I would only have one shot at it as I only have about a quarter tank of gas in my pickup truck.

I guess I could go grab the big truck and bobtail somewhere as it is full of fuel.

This is our town...

Don't know. Several of Mary's family members are unaccounted for.

She has lived in this area all of her life and it is very likely that she knew some, if not many of the victims. I have only lived here the past few years so my roots aren't very deep and I don't know many folks here.

She is still asleep and doesn't know any of this info on the death toll yet. I'm sure she will freak when I tell her...

I love you people... D is taking a nap, I am freaking out too much to nap and I am trying to get things together to head to his mom and dads. Gonna siphon the gas out of my car for the truck and take the big truck up too as we go. Leaving horse feed at moms on the way, and still hoping to wake up and this all be a dream. They don't have enough power to run the water treatment plant, and I see things getting rough if it is like this for 3+ weeks. I just want to keep the kids safe.

I have net on my phone and he has a data card. Been using inverter for laptop to see what is going on, and the neighbors brother works for the power company and confirmed what we been hearing. Mom's great aunt died yesterday and we are still trying to get in touch with everybody. My immediate family is all accounted for, but I still have close friends I can't get a hold of. It's been helicopters and sirens all day and I know those are suppose to be signs of comfort coming for some but it makes me want to just cry. We are so lucky, God was definitely watching over us.

We have reached the homeland...

Hope nobody from my past saw me when I rolled in...

I got a depressing text from D at 1:30 this morning.

Good news is we got a call 4 hrs ago that power was back on at our house.bad news is we got a call an hr ago that our house was on fire.can this week get worse?

I don't know anymore than this.

I know D is a proud man and doesn't take help from people most times, but I just heard he's lost everything.

I'm calling y'all to action!!!

Anything you can do to help, let me know via text, PM, or whatever.

Mary was as distraught as I've ever seen/heard her before this fire.

Let's pull together, folks!

Mary just sent me pics via text.

They're house is destroyed.

I'm actually in tears over this.

Help is coming you two!!!

After friends and family got what they could outta the house, the roof started burning again and the fire Dept was called back out to the scene.

The house is a total loss, but at least they have most of their belongings.

First off; Brian I will kick you in the nutsack repeatedly when I see you.

Secondly; We didn't lose everything as we originally thought. Due to the help from Mary's family, who stood guard over the house with shotguns until daylight, and the help from neighbors, some family, and a dozen or more total strangers, they were able to get almost all of our possessions out of the house in one morning before the fire re-ignited.

We only lost what linens and toiletries were in that bathroom, our living room stuff due to smoke and water damage mostly, and a few minor things. The bedrooms were mostly just a little wet and most everything was saved from them. The other end of the house where my office and the utility room was was undamaged.

Until I started getting all the texts from friends and even some from strangers this morning (Thanks a lot Big Mouth), my train of thought was really about how lucky we have been this week. Then I began to wonder when that luck will run out. The way I see it, we have cashed in two favors from God in one week. First; our home and family get spared from an F5 tornado by less than 1/2 mile. Second; God gave me the wisdom to move my family to stay with friends in Indiana, where I knew they would be safe. You see, if we had been home, based on the time of the night and the location in which the fire started in the house, there is a good chance this would have been a TRAGIC event.

As for the cause...We got power back on last night and my guess is a power surge of some sort. The fire was reported less than two hours after the power came back on. The fire started in a built in, wall mounted space heater in the bathroom. That space heater has never been turned on the entire time we have lived at the house. The reason we got power on so quickly(most everyone else in the area is still in the dark) is because they ran some sort of emergency line up to the power block that we are on. It is the same power block as City Hall, Police Station, and the firehouse.

Since you guys already got the ball rolling I guess, like Brian said, I don't have much choice. I will assure you though that anything we receive above what little we actually need, will be donated to other families that are much worse off than us in our area due to the tornadoes.

Wow, keep us filled in......

There is a family up here close who's parents are down there and lost everything in one of the tornados. A truck line up here is helping them gather stuff up and sending it down for free. It is amazing how much stuff they have come up with. Looks as if it will be more than one semi full and they will be helping a lot more than just her parents.
