Just curious about SOS numbers

While the membership level might be kept secret, can anyone tell us the rate of membership growth? It seems logical that a big membership boost would occur once word got out. But are most OSO loyalists coming here too?

No secrets.
First, there were some founders testing the site.
Then about a month ago... a few hundred charters were added tested the site some more. The other thousand or so joined within the last couple of weeks.
So... 1387, divided by a month... 40 or 50 a day? with a couple of peak days at first.

I don't know what an "OSO loyalist" is, but I know that the purpose of this site was not to harm another site, but to fill a need. I visit both sites. I actually had a member of OSO, (who joined OSO in 2007) actually ask me what I was doing over there, now that I had this site to visit.
What am I doing over there??? I have been a member there for almost 5 years. I am, and will always be... an OSO "alum."

I am proud of what many people did to help make OSO great, and I am proud of what many people did to create this site. I don't see them as mutually exclusive.

Funny, this subject was also on my mind. So on Friday I recorded how many members both sites had and at some future date was going to share the results. I guess the future is now. LOL

Nov 21 OSO = 35,912 Nov 23 am = 35, 937 = increase of 25 members

Nov 21 SOS = 1,366 Nov 23 am = 1,415 = increase of 49 members

Conclusion = SOS is growing at twice the rate of OSO. Yippee - were winning !! :)

OK, here is a skill testing question for you. If SOS continues to grow at twice the rate of OSO, how long before SOS passes OSO in membership? I know I should have stayed in school longer. :)

Bob

This can't happen... for other reasons.

But... given the data supplied by Bob, if it were to remain consistent at 25/50 ratio per day...
it would take about 1325 days for SOS to pass OSO and it would happen around the 66,000 mark.

But that won't happen. If there were 66,000 potential members, OSO would have gained more than 35,000 by now.

Oh crap. I used 25 to 50 per day. I see now that it's per two days. It would take longer. But not twice as long.

It depends on the rate OSO grows at. If they don't grow at all, in that scenario, neither do we. And we know that won't happen.

Here is a good evaluation method instead of "member count"

Number of Top posters in OSO = (some one find it)
Number of Top "active" members posting on OSO= (some one find it)

Top poster in SOS. and active members on SOS. ?
This will tell you the story.
I bet most of the "Tops" used to be there.. now they are here. End of story.
We just need to get more of the "word" out. May be something with "westmarine" or some magazine thingies, but this is for the Marketing gurus.

You guys are spending way too much time on this. :boxing_smiley:

The Founding Members have started something special here. Don't know what I did to be invited as a Charter Member, but I'm sure having fun over here.

Now...sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labors...Founders. And watch this puppy grow. :sifone:

You own a boat?? :D

Will history repeat itself?

Will SOS turn out to be a good as that "other site" once was - is it already, with just fewer members (currently)? (OSO) was once great, it was an originator and an innovator, unfortunately it eventually just turned into a monster... And that monster has been biting the hand that feeds it as-of-late. I am sure Steve - or Jeffrey for that matter - way-back-when, had no idea what that would have turned into... wow, what a long strange trip it's been.

Remembering what we all enjoy and why we all got into this sport in the first place, and then choose to share it with a bunch of "strangers". Funny, I met lots of (cool) people over the years at various events and parties, finally getting to put faces with "names". You'd seek people out at these events, just to meet them, where there were so many people you "talked" to online so often. Like the first time I met JC some years ago at the Clevelander party, I had to know - can you really build an engine using duct tape!? (He told me, but swore me to secrecy!). ;) Later that same night I met Eddie Young - whole different approach to engine building BTW... lol! Guys like Bob Saccenti & Craig Barrie - walking offshore encyclopedias - just hanging out and totally approachable, countless race teams, manufacturers and just every-day-joes swapping stories! You had this feeling of camaraderie - like you knew them for years, even if you never met - just cuz we all had that common denominator, performance boating. There was a respect amongst the members, people always helped people - fund raisers, donations, parts, whatever... never a question, just a helping-hand. Not sure who else misses that, but I am guessing those of you that started SOS do, as it has to be more than just the censoring on the other site that drove you here?

But, enough of all that - it would be cool to see this site "reinvent the wheel" and become a site - hell, THE site - that people come to from around the country - and world - to share boating stories! Bring back the fun, the excitement and the thrill of offshore powerboating - online.

Thanks for that great post. And welcome.

As long as the core group that started SOS keeps the number the "internet boaters" to a minimum, the site can become the spot to be. As the site grows in popularity, and people start feeling that this is the place to air out BS about companies, individuals, etc, you will have more and more people hiding behind keyboards trying to start trouble.

The nice thing is that there seems to be more moderators with the abilty to weed these people out over here from the start. Speedgirl & I in certain periods, had only ourselves to sift through thousands of posts, and 30,000+ members, making it difficult to curb issues before they got out of hand. We do the best we can, but that's a large task when you have an active life outside of these forums. Steve's father battling cancer made him have to rightfully change his priorities during that time, making it more difficult for him to pay as much attention to things as well. It was time to move on for our boy Steve, who was the heart of OSO.

If the overall mood is thought to be upbeat on this site, and ZERO tolerance is given to serious rumors looking to hurt members or manufacturers in the sport, this will be a great place. You HAVE to cut the troublemakers out immediately. Whether they are your buddies just causing trouble, or you just like reading tabloid style reports, is a cancer to forums. Eventually people will become turned off or scared to post anything, which will kill it.

You'll know you're doing well when you start seeing manufacturers feel comfortable posting about new products and activities, without feeling they'll be disrespected by some unknown internet persona. You will get many more members because of this. You will loose just as many if people are allowed to spew misinformation at will.

As always, good luck! It's a great new place to visit! :hurray::cheers2:
