This thread is for everyone to add something they have learned, typically something you would have preferred not to have had the opportunity to learn...
Sunday, I learned...
GPS is almost useless in Arizona outside of the city...
Had a project this past week while wife was out-of-town. Stole 2 really nice cabinets out of the laundry room and hung them where they belong (and were more useful) in the kitchen on a wall that only had base cabs. LOOKS GREAT!!! She got home on Thurs. Wife loves it!
So, as of Sat. we no longer have a cab in the laundry room that previously held detergent/dryer sheets, light bulbs, batteries, etc... So she goes to HD and Lowes looking for a Cab. All cheap crap.
Now, when we moved into this house, we decided this is where we want to live the rest of our lives together. We aren't going to cut corners, or do anything "on the cheap" just to get it done.
So, she get's on Craigslist and finds a 36"x36" Alder wall cabinet. Arch top raised panel doors, brand new, in the box, never installed... was ordered the wrong size. Builder surplus. $40.00:hurray::hurray:
This is easily a $250-300+ cabinet, and a lot nicer than what I'm used to seeing in laundry rooms of my own double-wide's.
Problem: It's 70 miles away on the WAY NW side of PHX in Cave Creek/Anthem (yes, I had to drive down CAREFREE HWY (RT74) (yes really, now that the song is in your head...)
So, the guy gave us cross-streets to get close, then call...
Well, GPS in AZ doesn't take into account that a rural rd may be 20-50 miles long, but every-now-and-again there is a mountain in the way that breaks the road up. This road may be in several incremental sections less than a mile long. (Actually, my house is on a road like this, and my section is only 1/2 mile with 3 houses). Now, once you navigate around the mountain, the road picks back up under the same name, running on the same long/lat. You're only ~1-2 miles from where the road ended into the mountain, but you had to track 20+ miles around the mountain, and, desert terrain so you're not exactly running 70mph, and you better have 4x4...
So: Cabinet $40, Fuel ~$75, Time 3.5-4 hrs. Still a pretty good deal.
