How Fast is this F-16 Going?

These Pilots are absolutely amazing. These Tactical Demo by the Navy Pilots at the Detroit Gold Cup Race are the best that I have ever seen. All three days the Navy Pilots came ripping down the river at speeds over 700mph. This is a Spectacular shot of the jet staring point of the sound barrier that I took while perched in the Pit Tower.

I don't see it...But when I lived in VA we built a boat for an F-14 pilot, he kept his boat in Marathon Key and he frequented the Air Force base there, He said he could leave VA Beach and be in Marathon in a little ove 45 minutes, about 1000 miles, thats fuggin smokin...

Well lets see it!

Is that two different photos of the sound barrier being broken? Or a super quick double shot? (No Duh's please:))

Perfect timing on that pic!

Must be a really long distance lense on that camera as the FAA regulations changed years ago and the government won't let them go supersonic over the populated sections of the continental US anymore.

Picture I took last week ;)

Not a month goes by that I don't hear sonic booms here. Ya, it's disallowed, but it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

And it's not necessary for an aircraft to be exceeding mach 1.0 to show "visible signs of a shock wave." Often times, when even approaching mach at high sub-sonic speeds, there will be certain portion of an aircraft with higher relative velocities due to shape and size that will exhibit shock-like effects where there's a sudden delta pressure (which quickly condenses airborne moisture), making it appear to be traveling at supersonic speeds.

For instance, on a really foggy day you'll see trailing vortices emitted from commercial airliners' wingtips during landing or take-off (high angle of attack).
Same phenomenon.

Correct.... I'm sure it (breaking the sound barrier) happens occasionally by mistake or around 30,000 ft or 30 miles offshore......BUT ....the Military will not do it at any type of air show or demo.

As far as the halo goes......A friend who used to sponsor an Indy Car has witnessed it in high humidity conditions at tracks with cars travelling at 180 - 190 mph.

Now the HELO pic......... I was in it when it broke the sound barrier and I had the pilot fly by my camera that was set on a tripod and was triggered by the blast :biggrinjester:

Would anyone ever tell a mis-truth on the internet?

;)

we get a sh*tload of booms down here, makes my shutters rattle! they are offshore quite away but once in a while you'll get a WTF was that !:)

Hey Mosi:

I was there and the Navy Pilot explain that the jet would be flying over 700mph. Another photographer at the race has a better shot them me. I absolutely took these pictures freehand. It was the best show I have ever seen. Been to a few. You can come to Detroit next year and see a real show anytime.

Hey Benierz:

I WAS at Willow Run last weekend......
