We love the Gold Cup races. Go Steve!!!

Dave Villwock rocketed to his 10th APBA Gold Cup victory on a treacherous Detroit River late Sunday afternoon despite almost crashing near the Detroit Yacht Club and tearing apart the rear stabilizing wing on his U-1 Spirit of Qatar 96 unlimited hydroplane.

Villwock had trailed archrival Steve David in the U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto boat on the first lap but recovered from the near mishap to run away from David and take the checkered flag by a quarter of a lap.

David’s team filed an appeal after the race, saying Villwock had chopped him on the third lap of the event, causing him to lose momentum. Mike Noonan, chief race referee, dismissed the appeal later and upheld Villwock’s victory.

J. Michael Kelly in the U-37 Miss Beacon Plumbing unlimited finished third in a race that was delayed 90 minutes by lumpy water and a stiff wind.
