Group to discuss powerboat issues for 2015 race

FPC and the
Florida Keys government officials
will meet later this month in Big
Pine Key to try and work out their
differences regarding powerboat
events in the Keys.
The Jan. 30 meeting comes after
more than 100 powerboats were
beached on and rafted off Boca
Grande island in the Key West
National Wildlife Refuge on the
Saturday in November of the annual
powerboat races in Key West.
The powerboat club had been
forewarned by U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service refuge managers about staying
clear of Boca Grande, because of
concerns about having too many
people and too much noise on the
island that serves as an important
bird rookery. One of the boats during
the Boca Grande event featured
a D.J. and women dancing on a
stripper pole.
The club holds an annual poker
run from Miami to Key West each
year during the annual Key West
powerboat races. Part of the poker
run is a Saturday “Fun Run” to Boca
Grande, which events organizers
said they downplayed this year

I've heard the lady in charge is not happy at all. She said they specifically told them no beaching of boats and no helicopter. Stu is saying they did not tell him that. I'm betting there will not be a Boca fun run next year at this point......

They've been saying that for fifteen years. I think there is too much money involved.

An easy solution would be to rent out Ballast Key for the day.
