Got to love CMI headers

So it seems that people don't think that it is worth it to send back to CMI to see if they will fix them at no cost since they just did work on them a couple of weeks ago? Does anyone disagree.

I would think if I sent them back to the manufacturing (which is what most people would consider to be the right thing to do) that they would go through the whole thing to make sure everything is in tip top condition, and if not make, recomendations on what I should do?

I guess I will make a few phone calls tomorrow and explore some of the recomendations that I have gotten.

Yup and I will take the 150 rpm loss not to have to worry about leaking headers. CMI makes two types of Headers the ones that are leaking and the ones that are going to leak.

Why does it cost $400 to ship headers?
I can ship a 300 LB heat exchanger ( cast iron ) on a pallet via truck for $220 half way accrost the country.

I think that CMI is getting somewhat of a bad rap here. Their reputation, while not as steller as Stellings or Stainless Marines, is not all that bad. If you call CMI, invite them to come chat.

Even though there has been a so called derugulation of trucking, there are still classifications of product which must be followed. My guess is headers fall into a class 125 or something, whereas a heat exchanger is class 75 or something.

I don't know what a 300 lb heat exchanger cost but I do know what a set of CMI'S cost ( INSURANCE ? )

It's about $200 there and $200 back...I think my mechanic used UPS. It wasn't overnight shipping, but it came back in a day or two. That was for both headers, plus they both have to be packaged pretty carefully.

Brownie's gone, but yes Stainless Marine has my vote for hassle-free, good solid performance.

Again, Brownie no longer is with S.M.

I hope I am not opening myself up to a failure by saying this but I can hopefully agree. I have CMI's and don't haven't have any failure.

Statistically speaking there are LOTS of CMI headers out there so in my mind SOME failures are bound to happen, and we're certainly going to hear about them. I can't imagine they would be in business if they are as bad as this thread makes them out to be, but who knows?

My whole thing was that I sent away my headers to have CMI look at them and to fix a collector problem I was having. They "fixed" it, sent them back after going through them and giving them the OK, and less then 2 hrs later (probably 1 hr of that at idle coming/going in/out of the channel) they are leaking again and their response is that they don't warranty their work... I'm not looking for a hand out, but how about offering to take a look to see if the work they did really didn't fix the problem?

OH - agreed, that would **** me off too that they don't seem to want to stand behind their work.

It's really unfortunate and no one likes bad press but the reality is that stainless steel header systems (no matter what brand) are "wear items" and some will last longer than others, just flip the coin... You keep heating and cooling stainless steel, vibrations, rough water, over and over again and it starts to degrade it's strength...add salt to the equation and it's even worse... Those are just the facts..

Tubular header systems make power there's no doub about it and the bling factor is much higher but at the end of the day you have your choices to make and what's important to you.

I completely agree. Im being pushed into using Stainless Marine, however, the bling/maintance is more important on a skater than a manifold looking tractor exhaust. Power is probably not that noticiable. That is my .5 cents
