Gale Force Advisory with a 46 cig

7-10's is the day that I used to wait for just to go boating....Nothing better than riding the tops.....

I agree. Boat was handeling the conditions fine. Was having a lot of fun. Problem was I now know I need to pick where I come off plane very carefully. Even going straight would of been fine. The turning is what was bad news.

7-10's in Miami isn't 7-10's in Erie. We call them square waves. 8' tall, 8' across, 8' in between. I tried it once in my then newly-acquired 46 Cougar. I almost drowned from the water that filled the cockpit. There are days when it pays to stand in the parking lot, watch them crash over the break wall and contemplate the last run-in you had and lost.

We made a trip from Detroit back to Catawba one Sunday morning, It was blowing solid 8's and I just took on a full load of fuel. My cleavers didnt like it one bit, I couldnt build enough speed stay on top I would just get going and slam into the face of the next wave, we had to send a passenger to the ER with a busted face after the 3 hour trip back. I think there are still teeth marks in my grab rail. Team Baja busted his liver that weekend, I think it was due to rough water. :D

The State Park ramp at Catawba is one of the best shows on the planet when the weather kicks up. Pick any Saturday afternoon in July and you've got a good chance at being treated to a show you'll never forget.

The first act is everyone racing into the inlet. Then there's the parking lot derby where they all rush to beat each other to get in line to beat the storm. Then the real fun begins- watching all the guys that aren't going to make it. One afternoon a guy got so screwed up that the boat impaled itself on the trailer roller, then sank, half off the trailer. Took a huge piece of the bottom out. Now the ramp is fouled. Then some grossly over-reacting amateur decides to "beach" his boat. Problem is, the beach is basketball-sized limestone and his 24' Starcraft is aluminum.

Aint that the truth!! I remember going there as a kid and seeing the circus happen before my very eyes. I remember when to boats hit eachother while one was trying to get one out :)

I've only run in the Pacific once- a bunch of years ago. It was like glass. I'm sure it can get unbelievably nasty.

Glassdave was talking about the monster rollers at Point Pleasant last year. He said they crested the tops and ran down the backsides pretty much in a wide open free-fall with just the props in the water. A nice soft landing in the trough and power up the face of the next one. That would be a dream day on the water.

I used to run the pacific...call off work when the storms came in..couple miles out..house size waves, on a pwc. I was doing Research an destruction for one of the mfg's, they wanted me to break them :D

yep, one of the funnest races we had all year. Point Pleasant last year the day after a hurricane ran up the coast. Wind was blowing hard on the beach at like 45 mph all saturday and did a 180 in the middle of the night. Was still eight to tens but no caps and like 100-150 feet apart. We could literally run at speed up the face and kite down the back side on the props. What a blast! . . . . then . . . about every ten waves or so would be a giant hole . . . yea that was friggin fun! :sifone:

lake Erie eight to tens? . . . . forget about it! :D

I try not too! 6's are the norm where I live (hour north of Long Beach). Large craft (gail warning) goes up here quite frequently.

There were taken last year. 10-14' swell that day per NOAA!! I sh!t you not. They were spaced out and there was no wind so you didn't get the washing machine effect. Couldn't see anything but water all around you when you were down in between them. Scared the crap out of my passengers!:sifone:
