Overwhelmed Kentucky Fried Chicken halts two-piece grilled chicken giveaway
Instead, KFC will issue customers a rain check for a free grilled chicken meal

Kentucky Fried Chicken, the fast-food chain, pulled the plug (at least temporarily) on its chicken giveaway.

The response to a free two-piece grilled chicken meal promotion, announced Tuesday on The Oprah Winfrey Show, was so overwhelming that many KFC restaurants nationwide quickly ran out of chicken and started turning customers away.

"The lines of customers wanting to redeem their coupon have been out the door and around the block, so we're unable to redeem customer coupons at this time," KFC President Roger Eaton said.

Instead KFC will issue customers a rain check to be used at a later date for a free grilled chicken meal. That meal will include the bonus of a free Pepsi drink.
A representative for a South Florida KFC franchisee said customers would have to complete the rain check form, attach the free coupon, and then wait for a new coupon to arrive in the mail.

"Can you really have a promotion that is too successful in this day and age?" said Mark Bright, a Fort Lauderdale businessman who wasn't able to redeem his coupon Thursday at a local KFC.

KFC, owned by Louisville, Ky.-based Yum Brands Inc., introduced its Kentucky Grilled Chicken about three weeks ago, touting it as healthier than its fried chicken.

In South Florida, as the lunch hour approached Thursday, several customers were turned away from KFC restaurants as staff refused to honor coupons, saying the promotion had stopped.

Hollywood resident Yolanda Ovalle said she was turned away from a KFC on Sheridan Street and another on University Drive in Pembroke Pines after she tried to redeem two coupons -- one for herself and one for her daughter.

Ovalle said on both occasions staff at the restaurants held up printed notices saying KFC was no longer accepting the coupons. The signs however did not bear a KFC logo.

"What's the point of offering it, if they don't honor it," Ovalle said.

The coupons were available on Oprah.com for 24 hours starting Tuesday after the promotion was announced on the talk show.

The sad thing is, theyre too fukin stupid to realize that they probably spent more in gas driving around to different locations than they would have saved on the special priced meal.

I was wondering why the line was so long when I drove by last night.

I wonder how many gallons of oil were leaked in the drive thru line
