F'n Toothpicks

The kids have been doing projects at the kitchen table with popsicle sticks, toothpicks and other assorted stuff. They have been dropping toothpicks all over the house lately and I'm getting tired of chasing after them about it......well, just a few minutes ago I'm heading to the sink in my socks. My foot swings/drags into the little rug by the sink and BAM.....toothpick into my foot between the middle toes.

Break off what I can, pull the sock back. Marked the toothpick before I pulled it out so I can see how much had gone in (I do this kind of crap so often I know to take measurements first) Almost exactly 3/4 of an inch!!! Literally squirt blood 6-8 inches when I jerked the toothpick out and bleed like crazy. Dinner was ready so I wrapped it with papertowels and duct-tape since no way a band-aid was going to stop that much.

Ouch. I'm cringing thinking about it...right between the toes.
I think that will drive the point home when they see that.

OK guys.....I must have been dilusional cause checking this AM I notice the toothpick went deeper than I first thought, close to a full inch. Anyway, I cleaned it the best I could last night but since it's a little toothpick sized hole it basically sealed back up....especially now that it is swollen as CHIT! Makes it hard to walk on and I swear I feel like I can HEAR it throbbing! Even the top of my foot is sore to the touch. I'm sitting in my office with my shoe off. I did check the toothpick carefully and if anything is left in there it's a hair sized sliver.
Those kids are going to be eating fruit with their fingers and building with cardboard blocks from now on!!!

if its not better by tomorrow morning... hit the Dr.'s. If there is wood in there or if it was invaded by microorganisims (puncture wounds are notorious for infection)and infection sets in your screwed, if it abcesses your screwed.

if its not better by tomorrow morning... hit the Dr.'s. If there is wood in there or if it was invaded by microorganisims (puncture wounds are notorious for infection)and infection sets in your screwed, if it abcesses your screwed.

my wife agrees with rob,, you really should go to get it taken care of,,,the chemicals in the wood can and will affect your heart,,,( she seen the exact same thing ,,,, running emergency room in bradenton fla.) TAKE CARE OF IT!

Thanks guys, I expect a 1 inch puncture would to hurt and swell a little. Right now it's just swollen and a little red. It would be alot easier to deal with if it wasn't right at the ball of my foot just behind the center toe (hard to walk without putting some pressure on that area). If it gets any worse I'll get it checked out. The toothpick pulled out clean, looked completely intact, and I flushed peroxide in the wound the best I could....keeping it covered with clean cloth until it seals the hole well.

well.......probably 15 years ago I was at a remote dock late in the year with a buddy when I foolishly tried to slide up a wrapped dock line off a pole. Jammed a huge splinter under my finger nail......to where the skin meets the nail!!!! It broke off at the tip of my finger nail and was large enough to see the separation of skin to the bottom of the finger nail, but we couldn't get it out!!!!! It throbbed worse than this experience. So bad that after 10 minutes I begged my buddy to cut the fingernail OFF to relieve the pressure. He stood on my hand trying to keep me from flinching while he removed the entire fingernail.....As bad as that sounds, it felt SO MUCH BETTER after the pressure was gone!

Apparently I'm accident prone....smashed my pinky a couple years ago.....blew the end of it completely open to the point the bone shattered and the fingernail had to be cut off to sew the 2 halves back together (did go to the doctor for that one!!!)

Had a nail driven into the side of a finger joint....went in deep enough that it locked the joint in that bent position until we could pull the nail out...damn ribbed nail took pliers and a neighbor to get it out. No doctor visit thou.

Damn, I thought drilling a hole in my own nail (after smashing it) just to relieve the pressure was nuts. BTW, after drilling the hole in my nail, the blood hit the ceiling. But it felt much better
