Fire alarm systems

I posted this on another thread but thought I would share it on it's own

Our alarm system has been screwing up the last couple days, smoke alarm, anyway the guy from the alarm company came out and looked it over and reset everything, telling us were good to go. Yesterday at 7AM it went off again so they're coming out again to fix it. The last system I had in Wisconsin kept screwing up, about 20 times with no end in sight. The last time it went off I ran down to the basement and started pulling wires apart until it stopped making noise. It sat that way until we moved

He showed up last night, an hour late, and took down and inspected all the heat and smoke detectors (12 of them) He said some were alittle dirty but not real bad, reset the system again, and we should be good to go, I think I heard that before.

Guess what happened again this AM, yep the alarm system goes off and to top that off I went and reset the system and called ADT, the alarm company, at the same time they were calling me so they called the fire dept. cause they couldn't get thru. I called ADT on my cell and the guy kept talking as I'm screaming at him to call in a false alarm to the fire dept. He just kept going on about the tech they need to send out and blah blah blah, finally as he says he'll call as I hear sirens and yep they're coming to my house. Now the good part is I was trying to sleep in this AM so I had my Scooby Doo PJ's on with bunny slippers standing at the end of the drive way with the fire dept, light and sirens going and everyone one in town driving and walking by, do you know how embarrassed I was when I realized my Scooby doo tops were on inside out?

Stecz would be proud of you, coming out of the closet like that, I mean house.

Assuming you have an addressable system, is the same detector setting off the system repeatedly?

The tech tells me that the detector that goes off will turn the led from green to red and none have a red light all green, so we don't know which one is setting it off or if more than one is

Sounds like they sold you a dumb system. The systems we install are smart. Each head has its own unique address. Once properly programmed, the system will tell you which head (or zone) has activated. The system also monitors the dirt level in each head and notifies you that a cleaning in required.

Instead of grabbing a fistful of wires and pulling till the noise goes away, just turn off the breaker to the system. Then open the alarm panel and disconnect the battery.

This is correct.... All Systems should be addressable and your Fire Control Panel should tell you exactly what head/zone it is in...

That's what we have - the smart one - and it's nice for tracking down the trouble - but the damn A/C detectors go off at the drop of a hat ..... sensitive little ba$tards....

Smoke detector in zone 1 but I don't know where zone 1 is and neither do the techs

Easy to test on ours. Get the techs on the phone, have someone watch your main panel, then go pull the cover and wire on the inside on each in a planned sequence. Have the tech reset so you don't have a continuous alarm, have the person at the panel write down each as they trip.

Been there, done that.....

My biggest offender was a wireless motion detector down in the shop. #7:sifone:
