Dry pipe flappers??

MILD THUNDER

New member
I currently have stellings headers and the long TRS style tails. The tailpipes have stingers welded into the ends. There are no flappers in the tails. Should i install some of the weld in style ones? The ones i have seen have rubber edges on the flaps, and guessing those wont last 5 minutes on a dry pipe. What other options are there? Or is it really not neccessary on a long tail that sweeps down like these? Never had a issue, but ...........

NO NEED , they go way down !!!!!!

I have Stelling dry pipes as well Thunder. I did have an issue one day. Rodney phucking Dangerfield in a 60 foot Sea Ray cut behind us while we we floating i the middle of the Chesapeake Bay and put a 5 foot swell up in my transom before I could get the engines fired. One engine wasn't affected. The other required me to remove the spark plugs, spin it over and put the plugs back in.

It pizzed me off because we were watching the guy and at the last minute, he changed his course and went behind us.:willy_nilly::cuss:

So, in short, there can be a problem.....but I didn't put flappers on.

Did you try to fire it before pulling your plugs out? Or did you just assume and pull them out to keep it from hydrolocking?

I thought for sure something similar happened to me one year over 4th of July. Our local river turns into a zoo as everybody and their brother comes out for fireworks. I was tied up at my hi-and-dry waiting to get pulled out and my swim platform was going at least a foot underwater from all the 'Dangerfield' cruisers heading back to the yacht clubs. Got lucky tho, pulled the plugs the next day and no water, put them back in and it fired right up.

FWITW

I bought solid stainless steel Flappers from CP Performance.

BTW, Love the old style Stellings with the primaries swept way forward like yours.

I pushed the button once and it was locked up. I went back in the bilge and started pulling plugs while my wife was idling on the other engine. Some water shot out of the back two cylinders when I had her spin it. Put the plugs back in and it fired right up. This was about 4 years ago.

I like those headers as well with that swept back design. Mine are different....but do have the speedmaster tailpipes.

I have a couple of 1/8 holes drilled at the end of my tailpipes to cool the mufflers. No signs of reversion from them. Maybe that would work to cool the flappers. Just haven't been able to find a cheap pair of 5 in. mufflers ...
