'Cougars,''cubs' unwelcome on Carnival cruises

Jan 12, 11:19 AM (ET)

MIAMI (AP) - Carnival Cruise Lines won't be sailing anymore with a boatload of "cougars" and their willing prey.
The Miami-based company has turned down a request from a singles travel group to book another cruise with the cougar theme. The term refers to older women who date younger men.
The singles group says the ban is unfounded. They point to their first cruise on Carnival's Elation in December that drew about 300 women and the men they call "cubs."
Carnival says there were no problems with last month's trip, it's just a business decision. They have no room for groups with that "theme."
Analysts say it's meant to protect Carnival's focus on family fun.
Party planners say they've had no trouble booking with rivals Norwegian and Royal Caribbean.

I've heard Carnival is the bottom of the food chain as far as cruises go, that Royal, Norweigan etc are better and yes, more expensive.

Wee took about 50 boat club members on Carnival and it turned out great. Mainly because Carnival is a little less "stuffy" than some of the other boats and we tended to "stretch" the boundaries a little. I hear commandeering 2 ping pong tables for a beer pong tournament is frowned upon on some of the other lines :sifone:

I've been on about 10 cruises. Gave them up about 10 years ago, much easier on me to just fly some place and lounge around without a schedule.

I did have some friends just spent 10 days on a Med Cruise and they said that is the way to go over there. I'd rather stay/spend my money in the US. Other than Vegas, I try not to fly more than 2-3 hours- too much too close to home I haven't remembered seeing yet.

Royal Caribbean says YES to Cougar Cruisin.

Is Royal Caribbean the new bad boy of the cruise industry?

The world's second largest cruise line says it will pick up where industry leader Carnival left off in hosting a "cougar cruise" organized by California-based Singles Travel Company.

The Second International Cougar Cruise, as it's being called, will take place May 16-23 on Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas.

Carnival hosted what was billed as the world's first cougar cruise last month on the 2,056-passenger Carnival Elation -- a three-night romp that drew international headlines -- but said last week it has decided to ban the concept for the future, despite what is reportedly huge demand for the voyages.

The controversial escapade, which took place Dec. 4-7, was aimed at older woman who pursue younger men -- or "cougars," in contemporary lingo.

The new cougar cruise on the 3,114-passenger Mariner will be a longer, seven-night voyage from Los Angeles to Mexico with stops in Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta.

Like Carnival, Royal Caribbean only is hosting the event, not marketing or organizing it. The trip is the brainchild of the Singles Travel Company, which has blocked group space on the ship. The company is selling cabins starting at $399 per person, based on double occupancy, not including taxes and fees.

"We have no reason to deny this group the opportunity to sail on our ship," Royal Caribbean spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez tells USA TODAY. "We assume this group will follow our guest conduct policy, just like any other guest. We have no reason to think otherwise."

Carnival's De la Cruz didn't say why Carnival had banned future cougar cruises. The International Cougar Cruise's organizers have said the first voyage was a smash sell-out with a lengthy waiting list of people wanting to get on board.

Details of what occurred on board are scanty. Singles Travel Company had promised three days of singles meet-ups, dancing and "partying" inspired by Valerie Gibson's 2001 book Cougar: A Guide for Older Women Dating Younger Men -- a pitch that was filled with innuendo. As the firm had noted in a press release, a cougar "knows exactly what she wants ... (and) what she doesn't want is children, cohabitation or commitment."

Organizers had noted 2009 was "the year of the cougar," according to a recent story in Newsweek. The term has gone ever more mainstream with TV shows like Courteney Cox's recently launched Cougar Town on ABC and the Bachelor-like reality dating show The Cougar.

Cruise ships... floating home town buffets with geritol spiked champagne fountains and slot machines....

lol....I'm getting a hilarious visual of this.

I went to a Military Air Show with my father in law they had a bunker set up with a 50 caliber machine gun, letting kids shoot off 2 or three shots. I got in line with all the kids, and no I didn't cut in, so when I get to my turn they said no just for the kids:(
