Cometic Head Gaskets

When I bought my Cometic head gaskets I was told I could re-use them. Do I need to spray copper spray-a-gasket on them? Anyone else re-use thier's? what should I look for?

We reuse them at the track all the time. I'm not sure I would if they had a ton of hours on them though. Sometimes on the second or third time around I spray them with Mopar gasket sealer, it works awesome. If your head and deck surface are in really good shape it shouldn't be an issue. Cometic says to put them on dry. The other thing is I usually put a little silicone on the thin strip that seals the the ends of the lifter valley near where the intake mounts..

Mine have 250hrs on them. First torque..

Piecemealing everything together it sounds like blowers are on the way. I'd switch to the FelPro o-ring gaskets while it's apart. Get the heads cut for the ring grooves.

The times we have reused Cometic MLS stainless head gaskets over, we have aways been successful but we pay particular attention to the Viton coating thats on the gaskets especially where it is close to a water openings or around a combustion chamber where the gaseket area is thinner. The Ra finish on your block deck and head surface and their conditions will also have a major bearing on whether reuse is advisable. Those conditions can and will assure whether or not a new set of head gaskets is going to seal properly.
When in doubt, check it Out! If It Ain't right - STOP!
If you are not sure, a new set of head gaskets is always cheaper than the potential damage from a leak or the cost of a take out and tear down??

It's only my opinion but I wouldn't recommend that because once you o-ring the heads there's no going back.... Also, depending on how old the heads are you're cutting into the deck, effectively reducing the deck thickness and in a raw water cooled engine you'r asking for long-term problems. If it was an all-out race setup with 10-15 psi boost I might consider it but the Cometics are more than capable.

My blocks were o-ringed and I had both engines milled flat so we could use Cometics. :willy_nilly:

Felpro also makes the MLS gaskets and they're just as good.

The finish is coming off between the cylinders. The rest looks good.

Just my opinion but for $200 - 250 for the set I'm not inclined to chance it. :driving:

I know thats the way I'm leaning after reading this thread.

With 250 hrs and the coating coming off between the cylinders, I wouldn't chance it. $200 now may save quite a bit more than that later.
As far as o-rings, I use to use them with copper gaskets 15 years ago. I wouldn't even consider it now unless it was an alky motor making silly power. I have abused the Cometics and have yet to have a failure. I have repeatedly put over 50 psi water pressure with 15 psi boost for miles and miles and never a bit of trouble. That's hard to beat.

I NEVER re-use Cometic gaskets. For the cost of $190.00 it is not worth chancing it. I would suggest them in this application over the Fel-Pro wire loc. I have used both in many forced induction applications and for your deal Scott your better off with the Cometics. I am also a dealer for them . Thanks
