DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — After much anticipation, the boat races returned to Lake Decatur for the first time in 20 years.

Hundreds of people were lakeside to watch "Hardy's Highway: Race for the Lake" Saturday.

The wind delayed the race for a few hours, but, that didn't stop people from going out to catch the action.

"I was excited. It's a great thing for the city and it's good to see them bring something back and give people something to do and enjoy," said longtime resident of Decatur, Mike Mitchell.

"I'm pretty excited. Decatur needs more family friendly events that are just a wide variety," said Lori Mize, owner of Mize Designs.

For many people stopping by the lake, the races brought back memories from years past.

"When I was a kid these were still going on. and I was super excited to hear that they were coming back. Because I remember that it was a big Decatur staple," said, Morgan Luka, Owner of Luka Popcorn Company.

While most eyes were on the lake for the races.

People also checked out what the local vendors had to offer.

"It's just to see the community come out and everyone has been really supportive of all the small businesses so that's been good," said Luka.

One thing everyone can agree on, the boat races should become a yearly tradition.

"Just keep them coming you know, just keep popping out stuff for people to do, raise money for the community and keep life good around here," said Mitchell.
