I kinda lost interest when they pulled the Cart/Indy BS. Even now their fastest qualifying speeds are around 15mph slower than the old race lap speeds.

me too.....

my buds and me would always make it a point to get together and watch the Indy 500 no matter what, about 7 of us, just us guys.....I mean it's the INDY 500!!!.....we did it for years.......since that BS have never been able to get everyone together......and I stopped even trying about 10 yrs ago......sad......remember Danny Sulivans "Spin and Win" in '85???.....how cool was that?.......I loved that series, it had it all

Tony George is a effin a-hole!!!!!:mad: F*** I hate that guy!!!

Danica's "shower" commercial was cool though.....

good to see she's embracing the fact that she's an attractive female and not just one of the guys.....

Actually, I believe that the race speeds are very close to the same. Qualifying speeds were getting out of control in the mid-90's, and needed to be reined in a bit anyway. The damage from the CART/IRL split remains to be repaired, but with the big teams now back in the picture, there is some hope.

Very cool for me. It was my first Indy car win as a crew chief. I still wear the gold Rolex that came with the win, and one of the piston/rod assemblies from that engine sits on my desk. Danny is a great guy - we've kept in touch ever since those days.

I went to ten straight 500s starting in '78...the good 'ol days!! After Tony George pulled his boner I switched over to Formula 1 and haven't looked back. I still watch it on TV mostly out of nostalgia but I haven't attended in decades. I noticed that the stands behind the pits were two thirds full at best...economy or Tony George hang-overs?

Fastest Qualifying Speeds, last 20 years.
Notice the drop after 1996? I think Arie ran a four lap average during the race over 237 from what I recall. If so, it'll be out there somewhere.

“What happens at the racetrack is “the last inch of a foot”. A lot of people don’t realize what has to happen between races. It takes hundreds of man hours for every hour you run”

I moved to Michigan from Oregon in the fall of 87. In 88 I drove down two weekends for qualifying and for the race. An amazing event. Could not miss it after watching every year on TV.

1996 was the year.......

Fastest Qualifying Speed:

237.498 mph / 382.216 km/h, one lap, Arie Luyendyk, 1996
236.986 mph / 381.392 km/h, four-lap average, Arie Luyendyk, 1996

Fastest Race Lap:

236.103 mph / 379.971 km/h, Eddie Cheever, 1996

Fastest Unofficial (Practice) Lap:

239.260 mph / 385.052 km/h, Arie Luyendyk, May 10, 1996

Yep. 1996 was the last year of turbocharged cars; 800+ hp. Now they're around 670, and forced to carry huge rear wings (LOTS of drag) to keep straightaway speeds down. Tire technology has kept cornering speeds high, so the lap speeds have not dropped proportional to straightaway speeds. We ran 252 mph into the speed traps in 1994, but only high two-teens in the corners, so the lap speeds were "only" in the high 220's. Al Jr put us on the pole at 228+. Once the tire war started in earnest in 1995, cornering speeds (and injuries/deaths) spiralled out of control. Something had to be done to get them back down. There is so much grip now, that the speed difference throughout the lap is barely 10 mph.

Yeah. You only get one shot a doing it the first time. The Gilmore "Rookie Chief Mechanic of The Year" plaque is on my office wall. Almost forgot about that....
