I've had a home in the woods in Ohio for about 13 years. Tons of Coons around, but the dogs keep em at bay. Well, after spending two solid years in Florida, they kind of forgot about me. So, I put up bird feeders all over the place this spring. They smashed and tore apart quite a few bird feeders and were eating my Strawberries growing on the deck, etc. Well, at first, I thought it was squirrels..........
ONE MORNING @ 5:30 I hear this very loud, very scary clawing / ripping sound at the corner of the house / master bedroom. I freak out and get up and peer out the windows to see what the hell is going on. I can hear this thing behind the wall and all of a sudden a small Coon peers into my window - two stories up!! I banged on the window and yelled and he climbed down (the house has a rough stucco finish). Knowing a bit about Coon's, I knew he would be back. At 6:30 on the dot, he wakes me up doing the same thing, I sit up in bed to see him looking at me again. It's light now so I grabbed a shotgun out of my closet and go on the deck and yell at him. He was scared, so I tried pushing him off the house to no avail. Ended up hitting him on the head with the gun and he fell and ran - just escaping my shot.
That was it - game on! I set up an ton of guns for different shots and camped out on my upper deck overlooking the lower decks the next night. The FIRST time I shined a flashlight on the decks there were at least 5 on the deck (shot 4), three behind the deck eating up my mellon patch (shot one) and at least 3 more on nearby trees (shot 2). Well, over the following week I killed around a dozen more. I figure I only killed about half of the group though. I'll be back at it next Spring. :sifone:
