S-57 ‘Catlow’ Racing Around The Island

Catlow-Bermuda-August-17-2014.jpg

The shorelines were crowded with onlookers on Sunday when the 2014 Around the Island Powerboat Race took place, with sponsor Rubis putting up a $10,000 purse for the event.

Cameron Harris and Lavon Seymour racing in S-57 “Catlow” were the second boat to cross the finish line at Ferry Reach in a time of 40.49. Their course time would be the fastest race time of the day. The S-57 thirty foot Predator came in some two minutes behind the race winners after having started the race some eighteen minutes behind them.

The videos below were recorded on board the S-57 “Catlow” and are posted in three parts. Part one shows the boat from the start making its way out of Ferry Reach, along North Shore and into Hamilton Harbour and back out.

Part two shows the boat continuing towards Five Star Island, across Great Sound, passing the cruise ships in Dockyard and making their way on to South Shore.

Part three sees Cameron Harris and Lavon Seymour racing down the South Shore coast, rounding the east end of the island before making their way up North Shore to enter the pylons and take class honours.

Powerful Hurricane Gonzalo approaching Bermuda

HAMILTON, Bermuda — Hurricane Gonzalo roared toward Bermuda as a powerful Category 4 storm early Friday amid warnings by forecasters that the British island territory would likely be hit with damaging winds and life-threatening storm surge in coming hours.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said conditions in Bermuda, where a hurricane warning is in effect, would begin deteriorating later Friday morning. At 5 a.m. EDT, Gonzalo was centered about 240 miles (385 kilometers) south-southwest of Bermuda, packing top sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph).

The prime minister of the tiny territory in the Atlantic had urged those in low-lying areas to consider moving to higher ground as Bermuda braced for Gonzalo's approach. "This hurricane is a large storm, and we should expect at least 24 hours of storm-force winds," Premier Michael Dunkley said.

Forecasters said Gonzalo was moving to the north-northeast at 15 mph (24 kph) and the eye of the storm was expected near Bermuda by Friday afternoon or evening. The Bermuda Weather Service has said the eye could pass within 29 miles (46 kilometers) of the island, close enough to be considered a direct hit.

Need a really big Apache!!!!

HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) — The leading edge of Hurricane Gonzalo pounded Bermuda with wind and heavy surf Friday, and the tiny British territory braced for the danger the powerful Category 3 storm could raise coastal seas as much as 10 feet (3 meters).

The storm's top sustained winds were clocked at 115 mph (185 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Gonzalo was moving north-northeast at 16 mph (26 kph) and was expected to batter Bermuda for hours during the night.

Meteorologist Dennis Feltgen said a storm surge was approaching Bermuda as waves of 35 to 40 feet (11 to 12 meters) built up out in open ocean.

"That's a pretty big wall of water," he said in a phone interview.
