Corey Peabody upset Andrew Tate in the H1 Unlimited hydroplane finals on Sunday to capture the Apollo Columbia Cup championship on the Columbia River.
Tate, H1’s season points leader driving the U-91 Miss Goodman Real Estate boat, had won every heat he raced in over the weekend heading into the final.
Peabody, driving the U-9 Beacon Plumbing boat, won the Columbia Cup for the second straight year.
After Peabody and Tate, Dustin Echols finished third, followed by Gunnar O’Farrell and Jamie Nilsen.
Dave Villwock, a South Kitsap High School alum who at age 70 became the oldest driver to win an H1 Unlimited heat in history on Saturday, failed to qualify for the final.
The Columbia Cup, which is part of the Tri-City Water Follies festival, is the last H1 Unlimited event before Seafair, which takes place Friday through Sunday on Lake Washington and includes the Apollo Mechanical Cup races.
