Anybody using a satellite Internet provider?

My new place is too far out in the desert to get normal connection, and I might be able to get it through cable, but am leaning towards going with Dish or Direct TV for Television, and neither of them have internet service in my area.
Looking into Wild Blue satellite for internet.
I'm used to having high-speed through Cox - and I really haven't been that thrilled with this service, and their TV sucks.
Any suggestions?
Am I gonna just get frustrated with the speeds on a satellite connection?

Rut-Row. From what I've heard, satellite plain sux. Download speeds aren't much better then dial-up, and up-load speeds as fast as a carrier pigeon. Bummer Tim.

I'd go Cable just for high speed internet (no TV service) and Dish/Direct for your TV service.

Direct TV is hooked up with wildblue so you can get a dundled package. I never had any experance with Dish network, but I've had Direct TV for years without problems, and I recently got wildblue, and its working well

Trust me satelite is a hell of a lot better than dial up,I can down load 10 m/b files in a mater of several minutes, and I can even stream netflix movies. My son has Cox and yes its better,faster, but I don't have cable options in my area

If I want up to 5.0 mbs $349/mos

I'm currently only at 3.6:ack2:
And this is slow enough. It's not terrible for what I do, but in the past at different homes I've had MUCH faster connections.

Tim, I feel the pain.. When we lived in Md. we had a rural home address and only dial up. The cable providers had no interest in connecting us because there were too few homes between the large farms. My wife was attending U of Md business school and was trying to do her work with dial up. There were times tears were running down her cheeks in frustration..

Looks like it's gonna be the price I have to pay to have my dream place.
I imagine this is just one of many things I'll have to learn to adapt to.

Tim, check with your cell phone provider. You can tether your computer to your cell, but I'm not sure what speeds you'll get.

With Wildblue I'm paying 69mth and I get 12Gigs download 3 gigs upload on a rolling 30 day month. If I recal I think its 1.5mb/s . It seems to work ok with 3 computers going on at one time

I'm looking at HughesNet. They are offering 12 satellites vs 2 with WildBlue.
Have you had any problems with outage?
I was just taking that into consideration.

I finally got fed up with Hughes net and switched to wb about 1.5 months ago. Service is much better. Have had no problems yet with wb. Hughes has a fair access policy of 200 mb pr/day. Once you hit the threshold of 200mb in a 24 hour period they cut your download rate to a craw that you can hardly even web browse,for 24 hours. Wild blue has a rolling 30 day policy which works out to 400mb/d but its still on 30 days so you could use 6 gigs in one day if you wanted to. With Hughes when I call for customer service I always ended up with some one in India(which can be very difficult to understand), wildblue told me all there customer service people are in the US.

Thanks for the info - that's good to know, and you may have just swayed my decision.

Sidebar - I remember back when the sharing of this sort of info was why these boards existed in the first place. In many cases what a shame they have become, witch hunts and throwing somebody, anybody, under a bus...
