KEY WEST, Fla. (WSVN) -- A great white shark swam up for his close-up for a photographer who spotted the rare sight in the ocean off South Florida.
A group cruised 10 miles off the Florida Keys hoping to swim with sharks.
The ocean was full of chum, but not a hammerhead or silky shark was in sight. "I was aiming for hammerheads; that's why I brought all my gear. I wanted to shoot hammerheads and when we weren't getting anything I was a little disappointed. We were going to have to go back to the dock, and we wouldn't have seen anything," said photographer Guillaume Bauch.
The trip seemed disappointing until a fin was seen through the water. "I just had hammers on the mind because I see hammers every trip, and this great white decided to roll in." said Captain Bryce Rohrer.
The shark was a great white. The monster shark took everyone on board by surprise. Captain Bryce Rohrer said, "We joke about it, and I actually even wrote on a Facebook post that we might see one because of all the sightings around here," said Rohrer. "That was actually my last Facebook post, and what do you know? A week later, we have one swim right up to the boat."
Guillaume Bauch is a professional photographer. He jumped in the water to get a shot. He first plunged into the shark cage, then ditched it for the open water. "I was just wow ... this is my chance to be in the water with that animal," said Bauch.
The pictures are incredible. The cold-blooded killer floated just feet away from Bauch. "I called a few of my close friends right afterward. I knew they would be so jealous," said Bauch.
The great white circled the boat for more than an hour before wandering away.
Great whites generally stick to cool waters but have been spotted off the Florida coast before. Captain Rohrer said this marks his fifth sighting of one of these sharks in three months near the Keys.
