PHILADELPHIA – A man enraged by a noisy family sitting near him in a movie theater on Christmas night shot the father of the family in the arm, police said.

James Joseph Cialella, 29, of Philadelphia, faces six charges that include attempted murder and aggravated assault. He remained in custody Saturday.

Police said Cialella told the man's family to be quiet, then threw popcorn at the man's son. The victim, whom television reports identified as Woffard Lomax, told police that Cialella was walking toward his family when he stood up and was shot.

Detectives called to the United Artists Riverview Stadium theater in South Philadelphia found Cialella carrying the weapon, a .380-caliber handgun, in his waistband, police said.

Lt. Frank Vanore called the incident "scary that it gets to that level of violence from being too noisy during a movie."

Lomax, 31, of Yeadon, was released from a hospital after the shooting. He declined to comment when contacted by phone Saturday.

It was not immediately known whether Cialella had a lawyer or whether bail had been set. A woman who answered a call to his home number Saturday declined to comment.

A theater manager referred calls to Regal Entertainment Group spokesman Dick Westerling, who did not immediately return a phone message Saturday.

Police could not confirm what movie was playing in the theater, but The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that it was "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

must have been the new dirty harry turino movie, clint dont take sh!t from no loud mouth movie goer!!

Those who ain´t able to defend themselves otherwise or feel confident without them.

If I felt like I needed to take a gun to the movie theater, I wouldn't go!

Just join Netflicks and have the movies delivered.

Now the stupid SOB will sit in jail... a real safe place, right? ;)

Ditto that.

Now that SOB is in jail yeah, hopefully he gets that he made matters worse for himself.

I wasn´t supporting that guy, put your sarcasm filter on.

I´m only 5.10 at 180lbs but since 83 have been practising various fightsports from judo to wrestling and went from karate to Muay thai and Boxing ( for 20+yrs both) so I don´t need a gun. A lawyer once told me I´m one, or used to be.

One knowing his ways around with a knife is much more harder to take down than one carrying a gun because he doesn´t need to reload and a knife penetrates body armor.

A knife never jams or runs out of ammo...

Regarding accuracy it´s just up to the user IMO.

If someone is ONLY 10 feet away from you he´s easier taken down with feet and fists than a gun, it´s just two steps and the guy pointing a gun either panics or freezes and after that wakes (hopefully) up wondering what train ran over him.
Remember the size of a Boxing ring and how fast even heavyweights move.
Then consider some cruiserweights, an ordinary guy doesn´t stand a chance even with a gun or a knife.

Note to self: Don't dance with MikeyFin.:boxing_smiley:

As a police officer, I am trained that I will get cut if confronted by an attacker with a knife who is within 20 feet of my position and I do not already have my gun out of the holster. Worst case, I will take that cut to my arm or hand then place several .40 rounds into them. Best case, I tactically retreat while drawing my firearm, creating distance and slowing their rate of closure, then get a round off prior to getting cut.
