The purists will value the 98's (last of the air cooled) a lot higher than the 99's. Nice cars but just drive them they aren't anything special. Porsche has had water cooled cars before but the 996 was the first 911 variation.

Collectability odds will be WAY higher on the 993 series (1995 - 1998) as Jupiter states. Porsche made and sold more of the 996 than any other series. (Ever wonder why there are so many for sale?)
If you want a 996 go for it, but don't plan on it being a collectable in this lifetime.
I owned a 993, so I'm partial to them. One of the big things for me is the interior - the 993 dash is still basically the same as all the 911's before it. Unfortunately, they tend to sell for more money already.
As for the steering wheels, many of the different variations of the 911 have different steering wheels within the series. The 993 for example, had both 4 spoke and 3 spoke (more desirable, common upgrade) wheels.

I agree, the 993 series is the one to collect. The 993 series Turbo S is the most valuable (assuming you can find one), only 375 were sold. I have a 1997 Carrera S, original owner; 9,500 miles. I still love driving the car and may never sell it. Here are a couple of good links to learn more...

Personally I'd skip the 996 series and get a 997 if I were to go newer. My wife had a 996 Carrera 4 Cabriolet...it never was quite right.

The plain 996's are more common place, they are also more refined in my opinion. Not that there was anything wrong with the old air cooled 911's, but as was said earlier some still prefer the older ones.. I personally dont mind either. I also have a 996 that has some nice goodies. The 996/997 have more options or are badged S, GT etc will hold values better..
Also For what it is worth I am very pleased with my 996 & I have had several different Porsches in the past both turbo & non..

i have a 99 996 black on black C-2 with the MKII aero pkg and it is buy far the most fun comfortable sports car ive owned....25 mpg, 168 on a gps on the garden state parkway and gets more looks then a cigarette and handles on rails wether its wet or dry out... 85k mile daily driver

30K will buy you a newer one..... 20K is closer to avg for a 99.

'99-00 Cabrios go for mid $20s with higher mileage. There was a '99 sunroof, no PSM with 85k that wasn't selling at $18k near me. Nothing visually wrong with it. If you just want to drive a decent Porsche for cheap there's never been a better time.

Sure until you go to buy parts/ repair it........those guys aren't selling parts/working on the cars for 20% of original price though.........
