Crew members from Coast Guard Station Islamorada rescued three people and their dog Sunday from a capsized vessel in waters near Card Sound Road.
Upon receiving reports of a disabled 21-foot boat with three people on board in the Upper Keys, guardsmen on duty at Sector Key West issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast (UMIB) and launched a search and rescue vessel from Islamorada. Coast Guard personnel in Miami also launched an Ocean Sentry airplane in response to the call.
The Ocean Sentry found the capsized boat with three people and a dog clinging to the hull in Barnes Sound, which lies between the 18-Mile Stretch of U.S. 1 and Card Sound Road.
The Coast Guard boat from Islamorada picked up the capsized boaters -- and their dog -- and took them to shore at Key Largo.
There were no reports of injuries, according to Coast Guard reports, which also state that none of the rescued boaters were wearing life jackets.
The owner of the boat was working with commercial salvage companies to recover the boat, reports state.
"The Coast Guard strongly urges all boaters to equip their boats with life jackets, a VHF-FM radio and the appropriate navigational charts," the report states. "Boaters are also strongly encouraged to take a boating safety course and file a float plan before going out on the water."
