2012 "Official" NASCAR Season Thread

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.

It only took 40 minutes, but we caught a glimpse of the possible carnage to come at Daytona Speedweeks during the first practice session of the season.

While a pack of cars were racing in Turn 4, a multicar wrecked triggered when Tony Stewart hit Kurt Busch as they were drafting. AJ Allmendinger, Brad Keselowski, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. were all caught up in the accident during practice for Saturday's Budweiser Shootout (8 p.m. ET on FOX).

"I was pushing (Busch), so I'm the one responsible for it," defending champion Stewart said.

Nascar is so worried about making it close for the fans they are ruining the racing. It is no longer about set up and ability it is now about luck and circumstance at Daytona.

Ten cars finished on the lead lap after 75 laps with most going to the junk yard.. They may all be wrecked after 500 miles. Add some fuel injection fires and cars not re firing as they run out of fuel and it should be quite a show.

Jimmy , I was thinking the same thing about the fuel injection,,,,but they seem to think that the extra fuel pump in the tank , might aid the refueling , restart , after a run out.

The Duels are tomorrow....

Maybe the most exciting race day of the year.....

The new rules package, designed to limit pairs racing, makes the cars more unstable to drive. It's more exciting to watch and more dangerous on the track.

"One of the great things about the tandem racing is it separated the pack," said Jeff Burton. "One of the bad things about the tandem racing is people thought it was boring. At the end of the day, it is the driver's responsibility not to cause wrecks, but it is just really hard. It is a very difficult thing to try to figure out."

The theory is a driver is safer up front, probably avoiding the inevitable carnage to come toward the back. But Edwards isn't buying it.

"We're likely to wreck up there in the front, too," Edwards said after winning the pole Sunday. "I truly don't know there's a safe place on the race track with this style of racing.

Second lap and the junk pile building begins..

The previous yellow flag record was 16 .. I wonder what the fewest cars to finish record is.

Funny......

Danica has to really be feeling that she's not lucky in NASCAR so far. 3 races, 3 wrecks.....

Worse, crashing into a pickup????? Those foreigners just can't drive. Hitting the track dryer truck. That's bad........ (Yeah, yeah, blame the car.....) :sifone:

Reminds me of those famous words...
"Go out there and hit the pace car, you hit everything else"

Jet dryer is a new one:)

Glad everyone is OK

Think they are hinting at Tony having some "slightly questionable" equipment?????

With Steve Addington calling the shots from the pit box, Stewart again had a good car in his return trip to the desert, uncatchable on the restarts and good enough to hold off Johnson, Greg Biffle and anyone else who tried to track him down.

''It's been a long time since I've seen a car that fast,'' said Biffle, who finished third. ''On the restarts, I've just never seen a car driving off like that.''
