• Key West officially took over collections for burials and grave spaces in the city cemetery from the funeral home operators and undertakers. The sexton's office required all charges to be paid before burial.

• Key West City Commissioner Charles R. Pritchard was given the task to settle the argument with the funeral homes over the new policy that required all fees be paid before burial.

• Monroe County Anti-Mosquito District announced it would spray Boca Grande Key to provide relief for the boatman that planned to go there during the July 4 holiday.

Ex-city commissioner Terry Lee Garcia and former policeman Sam Cagnina were questioned in connection with the daylight holdup of an armored truck at the Kwik Chek Foodstore on Flagler Avenue.

Key West reached a settlement with the funeral operators, giving them 90 days to pay burial charges.



The most unusual catch of the Islamorada Fishing Tournament was a five-inch sailfish. The little sail came packaged inside a 24-pound dolphin. The small sail was mounted.

Former policeman Sam Cagnina was in county jail and charged with robbing the armored car at the Kwik Chek Foodstore on Flagler Avenue. At least 10 witnesses had identified Cagnina.

Part-time Key West resident Leicester Hemingway announced he had formed the new nation of the Republic of New Atlantism, which was a raft anchored on the New Bank shoal, six miles off the coast of Jamaica.

The Coast Guard issued a strong reprimand to eight boats that were found in the Navy's test firing range at the Marquesas.

A passing car tossed a tear gas bomb into Johnnie's Place on the corner of Grinnell and James streets.

The Coast Guard was conducting an investigation into an accident where two skin divers were run over by a boat near Sigsbee Park. Both men were reported in satisfactory condition at the Navy Hospital.

Fausto Food Palace owner Carl Weekley reported that $3,200 was missing from the cash box. After investigation, a warrant was issued for James Collie, the assistant manager.

Former city commission and bail bondsman Terry Lee Garcia posted a $20,000 bond for Sam Cagnina, who was arrested for robbing the armored car and was seen leaving the scene in Garcia's car.

A warrant was issued for the arrest of former city commissioner Terry Lee Garcia, for being an accessory in the armored car hold up.

Golfers were complaining that the improved Key West County Club was charging $3.50 for a round of golf on the weekend.

A Cuban refugee boat arrived at Plantation Key with 10 men, three whom were wounded. There was a fight with the Cuban militia off the coast where a refugee and a militia man were killed and their bodies dumped into the sea.

Former city commissioner Terry Lee Garcia returned to Key West and was arrested in connection of the hold up of the armored car.

A bullet-scarred boat was found off of Conch Key with the personal effects of two Cuban men. No trace of the men was found.

The criminal court judge said he would appoint legal counsel to defend former city commissioner Terry Lee Garcia, who was arrested for the armored car hold up.

Seventy Cubans found their way to Key West and political freedom.

Key West Police reported that 30 panes of glass were kicked out of the women's section of the jail by a woman arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

A Cuban refugee was arrested for stealing a boat to return to Cuba, then coming back as a refugee in a different boat.:huh:
