1935 The most intense hurricane to hit the United States passed over Long Key and Lower Matecumbe Key. The Category 5 storm had a barometer reading of 26.35 and winds estimated at 200 mph with tides 18 to 20 feet above normal. The storm killed nearly 400 people and ended the bankrupt Overseas Railroad.

1919 A Category 4 hurricane passed south of Key West on a west-northwest track. Gale/hurricane force winds lasted from 7 a.m. Sept. 9 until 9:30 p.m. Sept. 10. The strongest wind was 110 mph and a barometer reading of 27.37 was recorded at the Dry Tortugas. The storm caused more than $2 million in damage.



1964The Beatles arrived at Key West International Airport at 4 a.m. and were greeted by a screaming mob of fans. The group had been scheduled to appear in Jacksonville, but Hurricane Dora forced them to Key West, where they spent two days at the Key Wester Motel on South Roosevelt Boulevard.

1975 After a seven-month undercover investigation, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration began making arrests in a drug trafficking investigation dubbed "Operation Conch." Among the 18 people indicted by the statewide grand jury in Tallahassee were the city attorney and fire chief.

The current record for the heaviest sunfish in The Guinness Book of Animal Records belongs to a Mola mola that was struck on September 18, 1908 by the Australian steamship SS Fiona about 40 miles (65 kilometers) from Sydney. The fish was towed to port where it was measured and apparently weighed.

According to accounts of the incident published in the March 1928 issue of Scientific Monthly and the December 10, 1910 issue of The Wide World Magazine, the fish measured 3.1 meters (10 feet) in horizontal length, 4.26 meters (14 feet) in vertical length, and weighed 2 tons 4 hundredweight, which converts to 4,927 pounds.
 
1960 Hurricane Donna, a major Category 3 storm, passed over the Middle Keys causing extensive damage. On Conch Key, a barometric reading of 27.55 was recorded. Some locations in the Keys estimated sustained winds of 140 mph with tides on Upper Matecumbe 9 to 13.5 feet above normal.


1978 Mayor Sonny McCoy slalom water skied from Key West to Havana. It took him six hours and 10 minutes to cover the 110 miles.

1983 The new 16-ton monument at the Southernmost Point was dedicated.

Sounds like the swimmer is correct. Kind of funny on the same day, skied the 110 miles, put 90 miles on the southernmost point monument??????

1948 Sister Louis Gabriel died at the Convent of Mary Immaculate, where she had served since 1897. At the May 25, 1922, dedication of the Grotto to Our Lady of Lourdes, erected to commemorate the 25th anniversary of her religious vows, Sister Gabriel prayed that as long as the grotto remained standing, Key West be protected from ravages of a major hurricane.

1993 A defecting Cuban Air Force pilot landed his MiG-21 fighter plane at the Naval Air Station. The plane was detected on radar about four minutes before it landed.
