ON THIS DAY IN:

1911 Riley Brothers Construction Co. began work on the new weather station at Sand Key seven miles southwest of Key West.

1929 Malcolm Meacham, 45, financier and developer who owned the eastern end of Key West, jumped to his death from a New York hotel.


1956 The Cuba ferry, the City of Havana, sailed for the first time from the West India Fruit and Steamship Co.'s new terminal in Toppino Harbor on Stock Island.

1968 John Carbonell, theater owner and former mayor of Key West, died.

1993 A fierce winter storm swept thought the Keys, uprooting trees, damaging buildings, boats and power lines. The wind reached gusts of 75 mph at Key West International Airport. The Dry Tortugas reported winds up to 109 mph. The storm also destroyed the Fat Albert blimps at U.S. Air Force Radar Station on Cudjoe Key.

1996 Five people were killed and one critically injured when a seaplane crashed upon takeoff from the Sigsbee Basin off North Roosevelt. The lone survivor was a 10-year-old who recovered from his injures.
 
ON THIS DAY IN:

1909 A man died of leprosy in a house on Virginia Street. The house and all its contents were destroyed by fire under the direction of Fire Chief Fulford.
 
1987 The waste-to-energy plant, built by Montenay for Key West, was dedicated. The plant, designed to burn garbage to make electricity, was unsuccessful and later closed.

1994 A Chalk Airline seaplane taking off from Key West Harbor crashed, killing the two pilots, the only people on the plane.


The Tuskegee Airmen are activated, Elvis buys Graceland, Bob Dylan releases his debut album, Texas Western makes college basketball history, and the invasion of Iraq begins, all on this day.
 
1964 A hijacked, Soviet-built helicopter landed undetected at Key West International Airport. Two Cuban army captains had hijacked the craft, and the pilot was killed in the struggle.


1991 A Cuban MiG fighter landed undetected at Naval Air Station Key West. The 38-year-old Cuban Air Force pilot requested political asylum.

That was the second one in South Florida..first one was an actual Soviet Pilot...landed at Miami International. Mig 25 (new at the time) We (USAF) took it apart , studied every piece and sent it back in a box:D

ON THIS DAY IN:

1822 Lt. Matthew Perry, Navy, raised the American flag over the island of Key West for the first time and the Keys were formally taken in the name of the United States. Perry named it Thompson's Island and the harbor Port Rogers, in honor of the secretary of the Navy and president of the Navy Board. He fired a 13-gun salute followed by 13 regular toasts.
 
1963 The Oldest Bar and Cistern Room, at 428 Greene St., held its formal opening. The bar was the first "semi-open" gay business in Key West.

1984 No. 1 Boat Manufacturing Co. on Stock Island completed work on custom-built 75-foot passenger and cargo vessel for use in the Bahamas. It was the largest fiberglass boat built in Key West.
