1080p vs 1080i vs 480p

I have a Mitsubishi HDTV that is 1080i. I have a DirecTV HD (1080i) DVR and a progressive scan (480p) DVD player.

If I buy a BluRay (1080p) will the picture be better than my DVD player on my HDTV? Will it be better than the PPV HD movies that I watch from my DVR?

In other words, should I buy a BluRay player now or wait until I upgrade my HDTV to 1080p?

Thanks!

My eyes can't tell the difference from one HD sig to the other

The Blu Ray should be better than your DVD but about the same as your DVR

your blueray will look better running at 1080i/720p than a regular dvd even when upconverted. we have a toshiba hd-dvd player & can easily tell the difference between a reg dvd & the hddvd.

Now you probably will NOT be able to tell the difference between 1080i/720p & 1080p. i have a friend w/ a 1080p set & have not been able to tell the diff w/ their x360 or blueray when @ 1080p. looked pretty much the same as my x360 & our hddvd @ 720p.

The bigger the TV, the more apparent it is.

720p is much better than 1080i, its noticeable.

Get the blue ray player now, that way you don't have to spend another 300 dollars after you buy a new tv.

I have a 65" Mitsubishi and I can tell a little difference in 1080p vs 1080i, and a big diff in 720p. On our smaller 42" I can't tell much difference though. I think it depends on how big of a screen you have. All I know is I have been ruined by HD. I can't stand to watch anything but HD anymore. I have a couple hundred channels I refuse to watch.

i upgraded the computer moniter to a samsung 46 1080p 120 hz its mind blowing amazing if i run it from an hdmi cable, great lcd tv too, nascar or nhra look 3d

What is the model number of you Samsung. I am trying to choose a 46 Samsung right now and not sure which one to go with.

samsung 540 series, i bought it at Sams club they let me return a bunch that did not work (rca) the picture is unreal its colors are true to life and with 120 hz you never see the little squares i think the picture is better than the sony now. using it as a moniter is way cool if you have the world at your finger tips you might as well see it!

no its not worth it, the extra cost is a bunch of goofy frills like being able to connect direct to the internet and buy programing from the company the higher number series does not mean much as the current 540 series is better than the 650 series go figure? they have so many models its hard to figure it out

Really you have to just about get into 90" or better projector screens beofre the human eye can detect a difference between 1080p and 1080i. At present there is no regular programming even transmitted in 1080p. Although some sat/cable providers are doing it with their VOD movies. The Blu-Ray will be a serious improvement over your regular DVD player as it's hi-def. As for 720p being better/worse than 1080i...it depends. 720 tends to have an edge in fast motion scenes (such as sports) but other than that, they're about equal. If you really want to research it, check out this board.

Yes, do not worry about the 720/1080i/1080p numbers. Unless you have a 60'+ set, you won't see any real difference between 720 & 1080i/p. The blue ray will look MUCH better and any HD set as compared to broadcast (except some sports broadcasts) Check out the new LG BD300. It is the furture of DVD's with streaming Netflix. It is a new technology/service so the movies and quality are a tad limited, but they are hard at work to make tons of movies available and stup up the streaming video quality. They are very cool! Plus, unlike most Blu-Ray players, the LG menu / start up time is more like a normal DVD. The others are still working out issues.

KEEP looking.
Big Box store make Sammys look better than the rest cause they get paid BIG spiffs. Rest assured when you go to anyplace OTHER than your local specialty store, you are not given proper advice. These TV mfg's are in bed with chains and push prizes, spiffs etc to sales staff for pushing thier product.

I sell them all, I won't allow a mfg to spiff my staff; I also set up each set up properly via a Joe Kane disc so you can see the differences in picture quality.
Once done, I can't give away a Samsung, nor the consumer Panasonic.

The BEST are: Pioneer Elite, Pioneer, LG, Panasonic commercial, "some" of the non Samsung sourced Sony's and some of the better Sharp's look good too.

They all look good if you are not sure what to look for, but once show the real diff - it is easy to see once you get a remote in your hands and set up each TV equal. Look at a picture w/ someone wearing a black or dark suit: can you see the lapels or is the black suit now med grey? Is the face flesh toned or does it look like he has sunburn? Do the colors look realistic or are they pumped up so the color jumps out at ya? Judge a TV not by how colorful it is, but how realistic the colors look. Esp red and green.

BTW, Samsung and Pana got their "reputation" because they are cheap to buy and forums. Since they are cheap, lots of people bought them and expressed OPINIONS on forums. Thus, no one ever says the latest toy they just bought is crap. Plus they went to the big box grocery store and was misled. But it looked SO much better than their old tube TV and they bought the bargain basement models so they thought THEY have the best. See where I am going?

Sorry to be so long winded, but "I" (and Audiofn) know good products. We have been in the business (me 33+ yrs) and see all this stuff.

Want expert advice:
Samsung / Panasonic? You can do better for similar dollars, and don't worry about 1080i / 720p /1080p - just LOOK at the set and go see a independent retailer and see the difference.

ok I'm done.

easy doctor pixal (billr) i tried many that you suggested as being better but remember i am using this as a computer moniter and driving it thru a good vid card with a gig memory and hdmi output what ever this combo is it just works amazing others did not have the photo realism(we can look out of the shuttles windows and you would swear you are there) the 120 hz did make a big difference toshiba, sony, and lg, were good tvs that did not work so well as moniters i have no idea why i did play with settings but the samsung was close right out of the box drawback is it takes quite a few menus to turn on pip and then i have to go thru a bunch more to turn sound on
