The evolution of the 38 DW Fury

there is actually more height under the hatches now, so no scoops for the 850's. there is an almost 4 ft bustle going on after the transom to keep the airflow smooth.

The evolution of the 38 DW Fury

latest pics, new carbon deck, canopy is 33 inches further back now, and there is a lot of other work inside. Got to give Marc (Geico) a call and decide what we might be able to incorporate, think we can do the ribbed windscreen mask (TalkkinTrash style)especially as those raised ribs can...

The evolution of the 38 DW Fury

Thought of this instead of the outer V bulkhead, should deflect water from any direction, but seems to be very difficult to build. For the actual cockpit bulkhead might be more doable?

The evolution of the 38 DW Fury

Its possible that a foam filled void would effectively create a stronger composite structure acting like a core in a typical fibre reinforced panel (between the V bulkheads and the cockpit bulkheads) and/or we could add more panels that connect the V and cockpit bulkheads for even more strength...

The evolution of the 38 DW Fury

Not sure about filling the void with foam. WPPA seem to be recommending a "crush" zone, the foam would probably transfer the stress more directly from the V bulkhead to the cockpit liner bulkhead, rather than allow both bulkheads to protect independently.

    safety pods ?

I believe the safety pod is designed to break away intact from a disintegrating boat and is usually retrieved floating by the rescue crew. Is it likely that a big offshore cat would disintegrate in the same way? Imagine a scenario with a typical crash, the boat upside down and the crew trapped...

The evolution of the 38 DW Fury

Do we go a step further and add two moly roll cages?

The evolution of the 38 DW Fury

When the canopy is laid up an integral carbon roll cage (like this one) will be built in.

The evolution of the 38 DW Fury

The "crash" bulkheads go in next, the new cockpit liner is structural, so we will have a cockpit within a cockpit. There will be NO penetrations (or hatch access) through these bulkheads.

    New safety rules

So... in the US because of "liability" issues the racing orgs can not mandate canopy design?...but yet there are still mandatory canopy rules anyway. The boat builder designs and builds the canopy...but does not have liability issues? So the individual racer should decide how his canopy should...

    New safety rules

"It seems to me that they are grasping to make it look like they are doing something." Ryan, I don't think that is a fair statement. There has been an accident, an investigation and then a recommendation to improve cockpit safety, which has then been converted into new rules by the WPPA. In...

    New safety rules

C1 and X cat have introduced new rules as a result of the Victory crash centered around improving cockpit safety including mandatory structural additions to the cockpit area and accordingly have increased the minimum weight for the C1 by 400 lbs and Xcat by 175 lbs. The Victory boat took off at...

    Fujitsu Fury Sarasota

Would like to thank everyone involved helping us right the boat and get it back to the cranes on Saturday, Gary Ballough, the Sarasota Police, Big Tuna and the crew of Sapper Head, Geico and the SBI officials who sent Thomas and his brother out with the pump and Thomas for staying on the boat...

    The Great Unification

Business plan + investment capital + execution of plan = (hopefully) profitable product. If you cannot figure out a way for your capital supplier to actually get an acceptable rate of return (i.e. MAKE MONEY$$$$$$) on that investment then fogeddaboutit. No free fix, magic elixir, turd polish...
