Big name colleges worth the $$$

My friends kids do that- literally. His son spends two or three weeks every summer with a religious group building houses in Central America. he's very fluent in Spanish and goes as a translator.

I said that last night as a joke...Now it might be happening I always thought if one of my kids went to a third world country it would be with a 16 and a ton of ammo.I told him if he want to to do it he is also fluent in Spanish, German also so he would probably translate his hammer skills are a little lacking

As far as student loans. If the parents pay the loans thats one thing. On the other hand if you ask your kids to pay, that is an entire different matter. It is very difficult to ask a kid, who lives day to day, as they should, to pay back a loan for the next 10 to 20 years. just look at the pay back, someone will have to pay back a lot of money for a long time. Our kids have their entire lives to get into debt, ( boats boats boats ) let them start with a clean slate.





John going to slightly disagree with you on this I have and always will help my kids but they also have to work for what they want.Basically if he went to Harvard he would be looking at half.Like I told him watch your expenses the first few years out and get the loan paid off.No new cars, rent cheap get the loan paid off first.
He has his permit and I did not trade the Titan in when I bought the dually so he can drive that just pay for insurance.Maybe I am wrong but kids have to find there own way to a point.I think I am right though a few weeks ago he asked me when I was going to the bank to put money in his account he handed me 2k how many 16 year olds can walk around with 2k in there pocket and not spend it?

When my sister's boys were applying at different "name brand" schools one thing that seem to be of great interest was the fact that both boys had been Eagle scouts. As a manager that hired many people during my tenure I can tell you that yes, a degree opens doors, however, in the end it is the knowledge and preceived ability of the applicant that will prevail. You can have degrees running out of your a** but if you can not and do not present yourself well during the interview process it will be all for not. As was said before, a degree from Harvard or Yale is wonderful, but employers are hiring the person, not the degree. IMO.

Agree Adam is sharp and knows how to talk even before a large group he will be fine once he gets in the door.But a big name school will open more.but like I told him it is up to him once he is in.

sounds like you have a great son, he works hard and saves money. I also believe that all of our kids have to work for what they want. with us, we did 50/50 on the cars, they pay insurance and have to work in the summer to cover there insurance cost and spending money while they are in school.
on another note, I think there is a slip on c dock for sale in your price range, you can call the office or go to the shelter harbor web site

i would agree there... if you can get into the ivys, gotta go for it... i have many close friends that wento the ivys, all doing well for themselves... you can tell the diff between their education and some of my other buddies that went to the patriot leauge school...

That was about my price range last year but this is not last year.Market for stuff like this has changed will see what happens.
 
Interesting topic. It is indeed a very special person sho gets into Harvard or Princeton - maybe the decision should be made after the acceptance letter is recieved as they turn down vast numbers of straight A+ over-achieving students with 1600 SAT scores...

Service academies are tremendous, but it takes a very unique and determined person to cross the finish line.

Agree with Masher - Williams top humanities school in country hands down.

The connections that are made at Ivy schools should far outweigh the near-term costs...if the student takes advantage of their opportunity.

You are right we need the letter first he has a shot he is an exceptional student but that in no way guarantees anything.

Exactly. Not to brag, but 10 years ago when graduating HS I had very high test scores, lots of activities, top of class, etc. I didn't even bother applying at Ivy League as a middle class white male my chances were ZERO. Same for my buddies who were 1 and 2 in our class of 500, lettered in 2-3 sports, NHS president, the list goes on. Neither got in to Ivy League schools. My point being that unless "high" on the SAT is 1600 and he has the list of credentials, don't count on your first choice.

That said, ABSOLUTELY go to the best school you get in to. The connections and jump start you get is priceless. Further, the business case for it makes pretty good sense. I went to undergrad for basically free at a decent state school (Mizzou) and then got my MBA there where they paid me. I do OK only 3 years out now. If I'd know at the beginning all the business crap I do now, I'd know that if I'd gone "heavily" in debt to go a top school (best I could get into) I may pay $1k a month in student loans......but would make $30K more a year and likely be on the fast track sooner. So, one of my biggest regrets was to settle for free state school (although it was a BLAST :26:)

He is a senior this coming year so will start the applications in the fall.Right now he is in Costa Rica doing a volunteer trip.He took the sats again and got 2082 and also did well on the single subject sats but can't remember the number.We have visited Harvard and, Yale, Warton will do other schools when he gets back.He also got an unsolicited letter from Princeton inviting him to see the campus so we will see what happens.I think he has a decent shot.

this was also an interesting quote showing the college isn't the kitchen pass, it's the student;
