Cancun recommendation

We were planning on going to Pureto Vallarta again in late March but I got a real low price on airfare to Cancun and booked flights.
We've never been to Cancun and need to find a place to stay for a week. It seems any place you read reviews on they're 50-50 good and bad.
We're looking for laid back and recharge batteries vs. party. Good food, service etc is important. Not interested in the night life or tourist trap day trip junk.
Suggestions please

My suggestion would be to head south to Playa Del Carmen. You get resorts, not hotels wedged into the island. And you get uncrowded private beaches. Cancun is a short ride away, as are lots of cool things to do- we did the 4-wheelers in the jungle thing last time- and hired a limo to drive us to Chichen Itza. All day was $200. We hit the Iberostar about once a year. Nice place. If you have kids, they can run like wild dogs all day and night and you don't have to worry where they are or if they're safe.

I have just the place... Take the 20 minute ferry ride from Cancun and stay in Isla Mujeres. VERY non-touristy. Sleepy town with enough night life you will be entertained, but not overwhelmed. You get around the Island by renting a golfcart. Good beach with clear water on the leeward side of the north end of the island. Food is good all over. One really nice restaurant is on the opposite end of the island called ROLANDI's. Open air dining - great food, and iguanas scamper along the veranda.

People are all friendly and there are few tourists. Most tourists are Euro or Canadian. The US tourists come mainly in the form of large sport fishing boats that winter there. I saw NO crime while there. Plenty of police, but they leave the tourists COMPLETELY alone.

Enjoy.

Isla Mujeres is the place that a lot of the stolen "go fast" boats are ending up. There are actually a fair shake, of seedy charactures on Isla Mujeres.

We spent a night there before heading back in the boat. We went downtown and decided to immerse our selves in the local culture. While we did not feel unsafe with there being three of us, I would not be comfortable in a smaller group. Nice to see for a day but that was enough for me.

As for stolen boats ending up there, yes lots. Over at Cancun at the Porto Juarez marina the dockmaster told us he came in to work one Monday morning and there were 16 boats abandoned in the immediate area. They get stolen from FL, taken to Cuba, then take their human cargo to Cancun and abandon the boats. They feel there is less chance of getting caught going that route. They then make their way to the US thru Mexico.

Note Sobo admiring what appears to be a NT 38 Vee.

Isla Mejures

We stayed one night at this place I think was called Villa Vera. Very nice, clean, relaxing. I like more action but we were not there for that. :)

Did my honeymoon here http://www.karismahotels.com/seaside/ Place was awesome. Plenty to do. It is in riviera Maya, second to last resort south. The last resort is a nudist owned by the same people. You can get a day pass if yuo want to go there:sifone:This is the place to recharge, very laid back.Ask for a swim up room by the swim up bar that is kind of hidden in the back...

Also if you have kids there is a resort (don't know the name)that has a huge water park.

Thanks everyone. We found a small quiet place in Playa Del Carmen called Petit Lafitte that fit our needs perfectly.
