NNRT Offshore Classics

Best guess:
1981,Tony Garcia and Terry Laughlin in the 38' Cougar "Arneson Drives" and Jerry Kilpatrick with Bobby Saccenti in the '39 Squadron XII "Apache". There were a few races that year both boats were in. Anyone recognize the background?

Benihana race at Point Pleasant NJ

1980 with Al Copeland and Billy Sirois and Stan Ware. This was the first boat, a Cigarette, that Al competed in the Open class. He first raced back in 1979, but this was the start of an all out effort with serious equipment and crew.

The 30 foot Sutphen was the class of the field in the P and M classes. Occasionally the S class would also produce a Sutphen winner. Stan Pike and Gene Whipp, in INFERNO, grabbed the S class championship in 1978. They displaced the Magnum and Cigarettes of the early 70's as the size of the boat started to increase from 28 to 30 feet. They just never made the jump to Open and were competitive. Richie and Chris ran ....She Devil.... in the Open class and that was the closest a Sutphen ever came to success in the Open class.

So this would be either 1981 or 1982 with Billy Frenz, currently of the National Powerboat Association, on the sticks. In 1983 he switched to the 33' boat. http://www.nationalpowerboat.com/index.htm

Had another check. The boat carried race No 2 in 1989,and the background looks more like Guernsey, but it didn`t do Guernsey,so it must be Cowes.
