Generator water pickup

Is this designed to force water while running? My other BT with a gen had a smooth thru hull and not a scoop. It feeds into a brass??? strainer then to the gen. Any ideas? I'd love to have the option of running with the gen on for the kids.

That's a regular water pickup designed to force water while underway. I'm surprised that's the way the gen is piped though.

I've spoken with Marc since I purchased the boat but not about the water pickup
