100.230 New Official SVL Record, Oops, Guess Not

Doc Janssen and Brian Forehand in the Outerlimits 29 Snowy Mountain Brewery set a new Super Vee Lite APBA record today of 100.230 on the two way average. Congrats, that's movin in a SVL. The propslip would be around 5% total.

I would have never guessed this would be possible in a SVL with the APBA rules. The rules are so strict to keep the boats comparable in speed with the 5450 maximum rpm, 31" x 15 5/8" pitch and diameter props, 4750 lbs, sealed Mercury 525 with factory certified seals, 1.50:1 drive ratio, 1.7 ratio rackers, 8.7:1 compression ratio whistle test, stock ECU, water has to come through the outdrive and the drive has to be a minimum of 1/2" below the bottom of the running surface. Plus they have to pass the pre-event and post event inspection to confirm passage of all of the class rules. An amazing speed with those types of restrictions....

SBI's SVL rules would be of the modified type. Bigger cubic inches (510), higher compression (9:1), modified ECM, etc......

APBA has a set of SVL rules that are quite clear. I believe that Mike reviewed the OSS and the OPA rules to make sure they were identical before APBA adopted them into their rulebook. If the boat didn't meet the rules, then it won't have the record. UIM watches every organization they authorize to hold record trials. When we had the trials in Biloxi a couple years ago they were actually there to make sure everything was up to their standards. The interesting issue then would be if the 180 record would stand. The rules are also quite clear that you cannot hold a record trial for only one boat.

But, if there was no effort to make the Snowy Mountain boat meet the rules of the class, then the other run may be found to not meet the rules of record trials as set forth by APBA as required by UIM. From what you are saying, there was no effort to make sure the boat was even legal? Record rules are quite specific, no single boat record trials can be conducted. And the boat and crew driving it have to of competed in an APBA sanctioned event within the past 12 months. And the event has to of been circulated to all boats that are in the class being run.

SECTION IX - OFFSHORE TIME TRIALS (SPEED RECORDS)
RULE 1 - SANCTION
Any APBA regular member Club may conduct time trials. APBA will not approve a sanction for a time trial for a single boat. Should there be a request for a single class time trial, sanction would be granted provided that all the rules governing time trials are adhered to. A race circular
advertising the trial as open to all registered boats in that class, must be circulated. The Event Organizer receiving the sanction for a trial shall be responsible for all of the expenses of sanction and conduct of the event.

RULE 2 - ELIGIBILITY
A. Qualifications -
1. Classes - All APBA Offshore classes are eligible to compete for records at sanctioned Offshore time trials.
2. Riding Crew Members and Boat - The combination of the driver and/or throttleman and the registered boat, as shown on the official entry form, (same serial number of hull that the driver and/or throttleman qualified in) must have competed in at least one Offshore event sanctioned by any recognized sanctioning body within the past 12 months in the same or equivalent class prior to the date of the trial. The driver and throttleman do not have to perform the same functions during the kilo run as they did in the qualifying of the registered boat. The hull must have been registered in accordance with these rules and the qualified driver and/or throttleman must have been full annual members when the qualification race was run.

4. Other Requirements -
a. Compliance with Rules - The boat shall undergo a pre-event and post event safety and technical inspection in accordance with the applicable class rules and otherwise comply with all technical and safety specifications as established for any other racing event covered by these rules.
