Gotta be cheaper than a fat pinko child molester.......it's gotta be...plus the kids will be safer.:reddevil:

My local buddy that did it last year has throat cancer. Sounds pretty good, they caught it early, hope he is well for Boyne Thunder and the rest of his life!!

Yep, best wishes to him for a really quick recovery.

It sure looks like they fly it close to the people and boats. Hard to tell which is zoom and which is really close....

What would you ask the company that does this? I have been put on the group to look into this. Just a few of my thoughts.
How fast can a drone fly?30 mph
If weather is bad, rain or wind, what can we expect for pictures.
Can they get still photo's also.
How many drones do you have, we would need to figure out where we would want them placed.
Can you land them on a boat, what kind of boat can they land on(Lake Michigan shots?)

That is a start of my thoughts.

I will quote that at next months meeting. My vote goes to the guy who made the 2005 Video, would be nice to have him do it again. But I will do my job and collect info.

The downfall to 'affordable' drones to do this sort of thing is their speed limitations. Most multi-rotor's only fly at 20-30mph. To make up for the lack of speed you would need multiple drones placed strategically about the course. There are lots of options as far as cameras and gps navigation. The flight routes could be pre-programmed and the cameras could be controlled via an app or you could fly it remotely via a camera app like they're doing in the above video.

They wont replace helocopters due to speed, and how long the battery will last, however I believe that in the hands of some people wanting to bring the viewers more angles, should be pretty cool. I will stay tuned!

This event is ran off donations, last year the Helicopter cost $9,000.00. If we can find a more cost effective way to cover event, more money for our cause. I received a lot of e-mails this weekend from input from my posts on boat sites. A few of the e-mails would bring question to what the FAA may have to say about using them. I will keep you updated.

The government has taken it's typical approach to technology. Ban it until we figure out how to make money on it. If you fly one for 'commercial' purposes right now you risk getting fined unless you acquire a permit which would probably take a year to get since no one really seems to know how to get one. lol This is supposed to be a hot topic at the federal level this year but I don't expect to see any major decisions anytime soon.

The argument from the enthusiasts is that the FAA has no control over airspace under 500ft away from airports. The FAA disagrees. I'm sure throwing in waterways will somehow add another layer of bureaucracy.

Had a long talk with the company about drone coverage. Sounds like a great add for video for a DVD, but no way could you use it for the full DVD. Had a very nice talk, to cover event it would take three teams with drones. The cost of the three teams will almost equal one helicopter. The restriction from airports may be a issue also, Boyne City, Charlevoix and Harbor Springs all have airports in town.

It would be cool to have one over the channel as everyone is heading out. What about the blimp ones they fly inside the big domes etc? They should stay aloft for a long time....
